Selbstredend läßt es Werther auch bei dieser traurigen Geschichte nicht an einer detailgetreuen Schilderung fehlen. So kommt Hayn-Got. VIII, 381 zu der Bewertung "ultrasotadisches Opus schlimmster Art". Einband leicht berieben und verzogen.
