Salah Fakhry befasst sich in seiner umfangreichen Studie mit der Bestimmung des Nomens und seiner Merkmale in den beiden grossen Grammatikerschulen von al-Basra und al-Kufa von al-Halil Ibn 'Ahmad al-Farahidi (100-170 n.H.) bis zu as-Suyuti (849-911 n.H.). Der Autor behandelt die Unterschiede zwischen den Grammatikschulen und den Grammatikern, deren Anfange im Buch des basrinischen Grammatikers Sibawayh al-Kitab (gest. 180 n.H.) liegen, und er geht auf die widerspruchlichen Ansichten ein, wie sie die fruheren Grammatiker in ihren Werken vertreten haben. Alle relevanten Bereiche der arabischen Sprachwissenschaft werden behandelt (u.a. die Partizipien, die unzusammenhangenden Nomen und die Pronomen), die Originaltexte der arabischen Grammatiker in ungekurzten Zitaten analysiert und durch Interpretation den Rezipienten zuganglich gemacht. Es geht aber nicht nur um diePluralbildung der nativen Wörter, sondern auch um dieaus fremden Sprachen übernommenen Substantive, beidenen sich besondere Schwierigkeiten innerhalb desdeutschen Pluralsystems ergeben. Ich habe bei derUnterscheidung zwischen produktiven und unproduktivenPluralformen die Hypothese bestätigt, dass dieKlassen der Nomen mit produktiven Pluralformen neueMitglieder bekommen und wenige alte verlieren.
