Paperback. Condición: New. This revised edition of Dr Neville A. Ritchie's 1986 PhD dissertation explores the history and archaeology of the 19th century Chinese mining communities in the Clutha Valley, New Zealand. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white line drawings of Chinese domestic and industrial sites, and of the artefacts excavated from them, this study offers unprecedented insight into the life and material culture of these male-only "sojourner" communities.Widely considered the most comprehensive archaeological study of overseas Chinese miners' experience anywhere in the world, this volume contains the total summation and analysis of artefacts found in 23 Chinese sites excavated over nine years, which included two camps (with 40 individual huts and other features), a Chinese store and 20 rural sites, including miner's huts and rock shelters.Considered by the Australian Society for Historical Archaeology to be a seminal work in the field of historical archaeology, this 2023 edition introduces Dr. Ritchie's groundbreaking work to the next generation of archaeologists.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book offers a sweeping history of Pureora Forest Park, one of the most significant sites of natural and cultural history interest in New Zealand. The authors review the geological history of the volcanic zone, its flora and fauna, and the history of Maori and European utilization of forest resources. Chapter-length discussions cover management of the native forest by the New Zealand Forest Service; the forest village and its sawmills; the intensive timber harvesting, and the conflicts with conservationists and expensive compensation agreements that ensued. Separate chapters cover initiatives to protect the forest from introduced herbivores; to guard protected species, especially birds, from predators; the facilities for recreational hunting; the development of the Timber Trail, an 83 km cycleway through the forest and along old logging tramways, complete with detailed interpretation signs illustrating the history of logging; and the family recreation areas and tracks. The final chapter gathers conclusions and advances prospects for the future of Pureora Forest. In sum, the book demonstrates how ecological study, combined with a respect for people and for nature plus a flexible, interdisciplinary approach to both local history and current scientific priorities, can be welded into a consistently effective strategy for addressing the pressing forest-ecology questions of our time.…

Soft cover. Condición: As New. 1st Edition. Precious opal is a rainbow made tangible. Its spectral blaze of color moves, changes, intensifies, fades, or disappears with the slightest change of perspective. Opal's intriguing play of color and unique atomic arrangement have made it the subject of scientific probing from early optics in the 1850s to a high-tech photonics today. Equally challenging has been discovering opal's place in history. Opal, both precious and common, is found in disparate environments from the unbearable heat of the Australian outback to the higher elevations of the Canadian Rockies, from a centuries-old site in Slovakia to a number of little-known places in the American west. A natural, wearable stone with magical depth, movement, and color, opal is a truly phenomenal gemstone. Jenni Brammall; Jeff Scovil; Karl-Christian Lyncker; Janet Clifford; Robert A. Smith; Harold & Erica Van Pelt; Carl Bento; Steve Bird; Leo Boner; Zbynek Burival; Michael Bush; Len Cram; Klaus Eiserhardt; Bob Farrar; Bruce Paul Gaber; Max Glas And Others (ilustrador).…
