Taschenbuch. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This publication describes the usage of languages in the multilingual society of Ethiopia. It is based on empirical studies conducted in nine states of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in 1997 and 1998. A research team of German and Ethiopian scholars surveyed about 3,500 high sch…ool students from 35 Ethiopian towns regarding their language behaviour. The data on the distribution of mother tongues and second languages are published here for the first time and are representative for a typical Ethiopian town. These data outline the development of multilingualism over three generations (students/parents/grandparents) and elucidate factors which promote the spread of multilingualism. The frame for the representation and explanation of the data is an adapted model of the social network theory. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -The collective volume explores key issues in current research on templatic morphology. This type of word formation, characterized by morphological discontinuity, relies on highly abstract form-meaning representations such as roots, vowel melodies, and derivational and inflectional prosodic p…atterns. Root-pattern morphology is most apparent in the Afroasiatic language phylum, especially within the Semitic language family. Because of its distinctive properties, this morphological system has long been - and continues to be - a central focus of research in phonological and morphological theory, and it is increasingly attracting attention in the related fields such as comparative syntax and syntactic theory. Perspectives on templatic morphology comprised six contributions presenting data from Tagbaylit Berber, Maltese Arabic, Amharic, uroyo Aramaic, Coptic Egyptian, and comparative Semitic. The studies examine root-and-pattern morphology in these Afroasiatic languages from a range of empirical, theoretical, and contact-linguistic perspectives, using various methodological approaches. Together, they aim to foster cross-disciplinary dialogue and advance our understanding of templatic systems. Topics addressed include the properties of the n -stem in Tagbaylit, the relationship between non-affixal inflection and valency in Maltese, the interplay of 'mediae geminatae' and weak roots in Semitic, the ongoing loss of subject agreement in Amharic, the adaptation of Arabic and Kurmanji Kurdish verbs in uroyo, and the morphology and syntax of native and borrowed adjectives in Coptic. 224 pp. Englisch.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The contributions in this volume emerge from presentations held within the panel "Time in the Languages of the Horn of Africa" at the 19th International Conference of Ethiopian Studies (Warsaw, 2015): "Ethiopia - Diversity and Interconnections through Space and Time". The purpose of this pan…el was to develop a better understanding of time concepts in languages spoken at the Horn of Africa, and to gain new insights into typological and areallinguistic issues related to the expression of time in these languages. Two research topics dominated the presentations: in-depth studies on tense/aspect systems of individual languages, and typological contrastive comparisons of specific tense/aspect features in closely related languages. The first section deals with tense/aspect phenomena in individual mostly Ethio-Semitic languages. Topics are Ge'ez static verbs, Gumer perfective/imperfect aspect, particular parts of the Amharic tense/aspect system (two contributions), and tense/aspect in the Cushitic language Oromo (a non-Ethio-Semitic language). The second section contains three comparative studies of tense/aspect phenomena in various Ethio-Semitic languages. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Explorations in Ethiopian Linguistics brings together twelve contributions on linguistic problems at the interface of morphosyntax and semantics/pragmatics in Semitic, Cushitic and Omotic languages of Ethiopia. The first section of the volume consists of two articles on interrogativity in Am…haric and Baskeet. Their main concern is the morphosyntax and use of yes/no and content questions, and the morphology of interrogative pronouns. The second section assembles four chapters dealing with complex predicates in Amharic, Koorete, Zargulla and Xamtanga. They point out the semantic/pragmatic differences between complex predicates and their monoverbal counterparts, the morphosyntactic properties of the component verbs, and the differences between complex predicates and multi-clausal constructions. The six contributions of the third section are dedicated to issues of finiteness in Libido and various Ethiosemitic languages including Amharic, Ge'ez, Gurage languages and Tigrinya. The studies show that a high degree of linguistic variability occurs in finiteness marking in these languages. In discussing verb forms that are neither fully finite nor fully infinite they provide further support for the hypothesis that finiteness should be considered a relational - scalar rather than an absolute - binary category. Most articles are based on presentations made at the 18th International Conference of Ethiopian Studies held from 29 October until 2 November 2012 in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia, and, thus, reflect recent research trends in the description of Ethiopian languages. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
