Und innerhalb dieses peripheren Bezirks ist die Schule wiederum am äußersten Rand situiert. Lange fährt man von Berlins Mitte, um sie zu erreichen. Unterwegs wird die Stadt dünner, lichten sich die Häuserreihen, während die Grünflächen sich mehren, auf denen in lockerer Streulage hohe Siedlungsbauten stehen. Obwohl die großen Abstände und die gestaltungsfreie Anordnung diesen Wohntürmen zumuten, Individuen zu sein, bieten sie im Gegensatz zu diesem Programm ein so einförmiges Bild, daß sie heute überwiegend als Anonymitäten im Nirgendwo erlebt werden. So unwirtlich und ärmlich wirkt auf uns Heutige das typische Stadtrandszenario, daß es uns schwer fällt, zu erinnern, welche städtebaulichen Heilsversprechungen im Bild der verflüssigten Gartenstadt, der von urbanen Ordnungsmustern befreiten Stadtlandschaft, noch vor wenigen Jahrzehnten glaubhaft waren. Das Ausfransen der Stadt in die umgebende Natur und Landschaft hinein ist mittlerweile nicht mehr als befreiende Öffnung, sondern als Chiffre einer Ärmlichkeit lesbar, die im sozialen Ausschluß der Randbewohner von der ästhetischen Dichte urbaner Zentren besteht. Bruno Tauts um 1920 formulierte Utopie einer "Auflösung der Städte" vermag nach ihrer Konkretisierung in Betonfertigteilen kaum noch Freude und Sehnsucht zu mobilisieren. Max Dudlers Schule ist in vielen ihrer Aspekte eine energisch kritische Antwort auf die Entgrenzung der Stadt. Mit ihrem langgestreckten Volumen und der wie aus steinernen und gläsernen Quadern aufgetürmt erscheinenden Frontwand weckt sie die Assoziation einer Stadtmauer. Die Stadt-Grenze, als der exakte reale Ort, auf dem die Schule zufällig zu errichten war, wird mit dieser archaischen Metapher visuell auf den Begriff gebracht. Quer zu allen Entgrenzungssehnsüchten besteht sie auf Urbanität und interpretiert diese in klassischer Manier als Verfestigung, Selbstdefinition und Markierung von Anwesenheit.
