Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. In Dawn is an Open Wound, Jide Badmus transforms communal lament about Nigeria into lyric poems pulsating with intimacy and despair. Dami Ajayi, author of Clinical Blues and Affection and Other Accidents. It is not often we hear that a poet has changed his style, especially for a poet like Jide Badmus, who is erroneously pigeonholed as an apolitical poet, known for his acute exploration of the body, sexuality and desire without paying attention to how politics is involved, or is imbricated within the three themes mostly associated with him. Dawn is an Open Wound is a book entirely "new" in his bourgeoning poetic oeuvre in which Jide Badmus writes about different, differing themes not just with fresh metaphor couched in a new poetic idiom, but in the way in which, within so short a time, he has radically reinvented not just style and poetics but more profoundly his political consciousness. Even in those poems which appear not overly "political", the poet broaches political concern most memorably in "The World is a Bat" whose refrain any Nigerian would easily discern and relate with.Ismail Bala, poet, scholar, and author of Memory of Departure. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Art has always been about the expression of emotions and desires. We have a favourable sentiment about poems that explore love and the intricacies of the heart, which poets such as Pablo Neruda excelled at. But we get conservative when a writer explores Eroticism as a theme. This is why Jide Badmus' What Do I Call My Love For Your Body is brave. But, this bravery isn't what gives this collection its crowning glory. The juice of this collection lies in the fluidity with which Jide weaves words and the cheekiness with which he conjures imagery. Like a blacksmith, he beats similes, metaphors, and imagery into poignant form. In the poem 'Weatherman', he writes, Is it not beautiful that you could always tell when my dawn is pregnant with a storm You spread like an umbrella to meet the morning rain. In What Do I Call My Love for Your Body, words wear layered garments of double entendres that call for the reader to unwrap them like a present. And there are poems that are bold from line to line, that needs no cloaking with metaphors: Dressed in nothing but weaves & heels,I stand, poised before you as a street sign: This Way to Eden. In this collection, body parts become edible. Sex is worship. Sex is sacred. And sex is.rough! The poet captures romance, love, and lust in their wholesomeness with a magical command of language. Jide Badmus approaches the theme with deft dexterity. He approaches the subject with the sacredness it demands. Jide Badmus approaches the Erotic with veneration. Words are flowery, and each poem is like a honey drop on a craving tongue. …

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Obaluaye is a poetry collection for the things that plague us. Obaluaye is a Yoruba god of infirmities and healing. The poems in this book talk of cradles and graves and every experience in-between, employing the duality attribute of the Orisha of epidemics. Each poem is an experience of health and death wrapped in a pod, of strength and flaws and a thirst for things that elude. This collection explores the human cycle-the routine of life and death (and a possibility of restoration, rebirth). It seeks to understand the things that haunt us-our fears, our nightmares, quest for freedom, the weight of responsibilities, the paradox of hope, devotion and betrayals, failed states and the covid-19 pandemic. Obaluaye is a realization that 'life is a cocktail of sweet, sour and insipid' and we are born to run this cycle, reaching for light, reaching for freedom.that ultimately leads to the grave. …
