The Geometridae section of this collection is supposedly the richest western and Central Asiat…ic reference material of this very diverse and yet insufficiently studied fauna, comprising nearly 22100 specimens of 1353 species-group taxa. The specimens have been collected in altogether 52 countries but the overwhelming majority of the Geometridae specimens originate from Armenia, Transcaucasia, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. There are significant materials having been gathered from the Balkan Peninsula, Spain and Morocco and, naturally, the local fauna of Austria is also well represented in the collection. The complete list of the countries of origin of the Geometridae is presented prior to the collection check list section of the book. All species listed in the check list are associated with the abbreviation of all countries where the specimens of the given taxon have been collected. The descriptions of seven new species and their genitalia are also presented. All recognised taxa of the collection are illustrated on the 87 colour plates. Eva Vartian is one of the most outstanding lepidopterologists of the 20th century. Her collection is above all renowned because of its species richness and the excellent setting quality of the materials, the majority of which was collected and prepared by herself. The collection contains over 140,000 set specimens (including 440…0 type specimens) with several thousands of additional pinned, unsorted ones housed in nearly 940 drawers. The main stock of this enormous material has been collected before the use of automatic light traps during thirty expeditions in previously poorly explored countries like Morocco, Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Syria, Armenia, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The most important part of the collection is that of the vast Iranian and Afghan accessions, which represents the best reference material from this region. It is especially rich in Noctuidae with some 60,000 specimens. The first section of Fibigeriana, Volume 1 is bilingual, introducing Eva Vartian and her lepidopterological activity in English and German. The first and second volumes of Fibigeriana (published in 2012 and 2013) provided a comprehensive demonstration of the impressively species-rich Noctuoidea, Lasiocampoidea, Bombycoidea, Drepanoidea, Cossoidea, Zygaenoidea and Hepialoidea material of the Vartian Collection. The newly published third item of the series is a detail…ed summary of the impressively large and beautiful Rhopalocera material of the famous collection. This remarkable part of the collection (stored in 257 drawers!) besides the best represented North African and Middle East fauna, includes material practically from all continents, including some historical material from Inner Asia and the tropical areas. Thus, the number of the distinguished butterfly taxa is really high, counting altogether 1 174 species and subspecies. During the preparation of Fibigeriana, Volume 3, the working team took some 15 000 colour photos of which the 183 colour plates of the present volume have been composed from. The third volume of the lepidopterological series Fibigeriana can be considered also as an identification guide to the Rhopalocera fauna of the Western Palaearctic. The detailed checklist contains information on the countries where specimens of each taxa were collected.
