The paper presents examples of well-known distribution patterns of Insecta, Araneida, Myriapoda and Mollusca in Europe, which exclude the Mediterranean region and Asia largely or totally. From these facts the possibility of overwintering of such species in extra-mediterranean parts of Europe during the pleistocene glaciations is suggested. The terms Central European faunal elements or Extra-mediterranean European faunal elements may therefore be used in the narrow sense of De Lattin and others. Most of these species belong to the chorological units of Oreal and Dinodal, but some clearly belong to the Arboreal. The authors point at the urgent need for reliable detailed distribution maps. 19 pp., 13 figs, gr. 8.

The fourth (final) part of the series of the Vartian Catalogue, containing the Geometridae material of the Vartian collection preserved in the Natural History Museum Vienna. The Geometridae section of this collection is supposedly the richest western and Central Asiatic reference material of this very diverse and yet insufficiently studied fauna, comprising nearly 22100 specimens of 1353 species-group taxa. The specimens have been collected in altogether 52 countries but the overwhelming majority of the Geometridae specimens originate from Armenia, Transcaucasia, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. There are significant materials having been gathered from the Balkan Peninsula, Spain and Morocco and, naturally, the local fauna of Austria is also well represented in the collection. The complete list of the countries of origin of the Geometridae is presented prior to the collection check list section of the book. All species listed in the check list are associated with the abbreviation of all countries where the specimens of the given taxon have been collected. The descriptions of seven new species and their genitalia are also presented. All recognised taxa of the collection are illustrated on the 87 colour plates. Most specimens are shown at natural size but certain groups comprising small-sized species (e.g. Sterrhinae, Eupithecini, etc.) are illustrated in 1.5x magnification. [9786155279072].

Añadir al carritoEva Vartian is one of the most outstanding lepidopterologists of the 20th century. Her collection is above all renowned because of its species richness and the excellent setting quality of the materials, the majority of which was collected and prepared by herself. The collection contains over 140,000 set specimens (including 4400 type specimens) with several thousands of additional pinned, unsorted ones housed in nearly 940 drawers. The main stock of this enormous material has been collected before the use of automatic light traps during thirty expeditions in previously poorly explored countries like Morocco, Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Syria, Armenia, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The most important part of the collection is that of the vast Iranian and Afghan accessions, which represents the best reference material from this region. It is especially rich in Noctuidae with some 60,000 specimens. The first section of Fibigeriana, Volume 1 is bilingual, introducing Eva Vartian and her lepidopterological activity in English and German. The scientific part comprises the annotated list of the type-material, a revised checklist of the Noctuoidea collection (altogether 3009 species-group taxa belonging to 673 genera), life-size colour images of all recognised taxa of the superfamily on 152 colour plates and a number of black and white and colour images illustrating Eva Vartian's life and expeditions. Fibigeriana, Volume 1, the first volume of the new lepidopterological series Fibigeriana, represents an encyclopaedic overview and identification guide to the fauna of Noctuoidea from Western and Central Asia. It is recommended to all amateur and professional lepidopterists who are involved into maintenance and development of collections and study of the extreme diversity of the Near and Middle East Lepidoptera. Budapest. Heterocera Press. 303 pp., 152 plates with color photos + additional color & b/w photos, hardback [bilingual in English and German].

The newly published third item of the series is a detailed summary of the impressively large and beautiful Rhopalocera material of the famous collection. This remarkable part of the collection (stored in 257 drawers!) besides the best represented North African and Middle East fauna, includes material practically from all continents, including some historical material from Inner Asia and the tropical areas. Thus, the number of the distinguished butterfly taxa is really high, counting altogether 1 174 species and subspecies. During the preparation of Fibigeriana, Volume 3, the working team took some 15 000 colour photos of which the 183 colour plates of the present volume have been composed from. The third volume of the lepidopterological series Fibigeriana can be considered also as an identification guide to the Rhopalocera fauna of the Western Palaearctic. The detailed checklist contains information on the countries where specimens of each taxa were collected. Fibigeriana, Volume 3 is warmly recommended to all amateur and professional butterfly enthusiasts. Budapest. Heterocera Press. 229 pp., 183 plates with color photos, hardback.
