Except for the covers this is a black and white publication. Born in Peaster, Texas in 1906, Robert E. Howard broke into professional writing in 1925 with the sale of "Spear and Fang" to Weird Tales magazine. By the time he died at age 30, Howard had written more than 300 stories, most of which were published during his lifetime but he is best known as the creator of his 22 Conan stories. Many others span realms as diverse as the distant past and the haunted present. During the ten years of his professional career, Howard engaged in voluminous correspondence with his Weird Tales contemporaries Clark Ashton Smith and H.P. Lovecraft, as well as many others. Surprisingly many of those letters survive to this day. Most of his letters to Lovecraft remain in the hands of collectors. Like Lovecraft before him, August Derleth's Arkham House helped preserve Howard's works. In the 1950's, Gnome Press brought all of Howard's Conan stories back into print. This book does not cover all of the realms created by Howard but it does cover the most important ones. It does attempt to cover Howard as a writer, which is why Conan occupies no more prominent a place in this book than does any other character. Non-series stories are examined as well as Howard himself in a chapter called Robert E. Howard: Cross Plains Outsider. None of Howard's many imitators have come close to matching the internal fury that propelled this writer through his brief but memorable career. This book is a celebration of those talents, and a tribute to one of the most towering imaginations of the 20th century.
