Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 5th or later Edition. Whether the Frank Miller company perceived the irony of their company publishing an edition of Anna Sewell's anti - animal cruelty novel, "Black Beauty", is not to be known; but the fact that a company which produced harness dressings, soaps, and oils, as well as carriage oil, issued this particular work is certainly ironic. There were numerous editions of the famous novel already on the market . so why not take advantage of the story's immense popularity. It was strictly a promotional opportunity for the Frank Miller Company. I'm sure it was appreciated by recipients of the book. On the front cover is a lovely picture of a young girl hugging the neck of a beautiful horse. She is looking sweetly over her shoulder directly at anyone looking at the book. The title on the title page is "Black Beauty: His Grooms and Companions". The title on the cover is "Black Beauty and Country Roads". The cover title refers to an additional work included at the end of the book : "Bad Country Roads - A Few Facts in Favor of Making Them Good" by Charles C. McBride, who was the Editor of the Elizabeth N.J. "Daily Enquirer". Just prior to Mr. McBrides article is a review of "Black Beauty" by John Codman, which appeared in the "New York Commercial Advertiser" The front cover picture is particularly pleasing. The rear cover, the insides of both the front and rear covers and the last three pages of the book are taken up with advertisements for the products of the Frank Miller company. Front and rear covers are printed in color; the insides of the cover are printed in two tone black and pink; the ads on the last three pages are printed in black. The product on the rear cover contributing to the irony is Frank Miller's Harness Dressing. At the top, above a picture of a can containing the product, is a two wheeled carriage, drawn by four horses in single file; on the blankets covering each horse is a word which spelled out collectively reads "Frank Miller's Harness Dressing" What is pictured is exactly that which Black Beauty was trying to escape! TITLE : Black Beauty - His Grooms and Companions [On cover : Black Beauty and Country Roads] / AUTHOR [of Black Beauty] : Anna Sewell (1820 - 1878). AUTHOR [ of Country Roads]: Charles C. McBride. AUTHOR [of the Review] : John Codman. IMPRINT : Frank Miller Company. PLACE : New York. DATE : © 1892. EDITION : Stated Fifth Frank Miller Edition. [Likely corresponds to Printings] PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION : Commercial Paperback published as a promotional advertising campaign; illustrated advertisements on back cover, inside covers and final 3 pages; contains supplementary texts; [204] pages; 4 1/4" x 6 1/2", color pictorial wraps, stapled and glued. CONDITION - VERY GOOD - This is a previously owned book which has been read, and shows signs of handling. The publisher used an inferior paper, so all the paper of the text is considerably toned, and is fragile (brittle) with the following particulars noted: EXTERIOR - Spine has survived with negligible wear - no nicking or creasing; front cover has a couple of nicks to the fore-edge creating a bit of small loss; surface rub is mild .the colors on the front are crisp and bright. The rear cover displays a couple of small stains near the foot . surface rub is modest . the colors are bright and attractive. BINDING - The covers have pulled away a bit, exposing the staples, and their attachment is considered tender; no leaves are detached or loose, but the whole should be considered fragile. As it is, the whole remains as solid as can be expected. INTERIOR - There is small top corner loss to the first leaf of the book (Title Page); the last leaf of the book has similar loss to top fore-edge corner tip with added creasing and crimping (see pictures provided above). The paper throughout is toned; there is scattered vague smudging. The interior is free of writing, free of marking. There are no signatures.

Condición: Very good. - Two Typed Letters by Colonel Charles R. Codman responding to Lieutenant Colonel George Dyer's inquiry as to obtaining copies of General George S. Patton's famous 1944 Christmas Card and Prayer. The first, dated March 4, 1947, consists of over 120 words typed on his 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide "Codman & Codman" stationery. Codman apologizes as he is "even sorrier to say that I am unable to find a copy of the famous prayer you refer to. Mrs. Patton undoubtedly has one and on her return (she was going to West Point over the week end) will see if I can get her copy photographed and send it to you." Signed "Charles R. Codman". In a postscript, Codman asks if Dyer can put him down for a copy of the XII Corps history which Dyer has written. Codman has further annotated the letter in ink stating "Have just talked to Mrs. Patton who unfortunately has not get one of the Xmas Cards." There is an annotation penned by Lt. Col. Dyer at the top stating that he's answered and has sent 2 copies of the Patton card. In the meantime, Lt. Col. Dyer was able to obtain a copy of the Christmas card as Codman writes him a letter of over 78 words on March 7, 1947: "Thanks for your communication just received and I'm glad that you were successful in obtaining the Christmas Card from George Murnane. I appreciate your thoughtfulness regarding copies for Mrs. Patton and myself but am wondering if they were sent under separate cover as they were not in the envelope received this morning." Codman concludes by saying that he is enclosing a check for a copy of the Twelfth Corps History. Signed "Charles R. Codman". Both letters are folded for mailing with staple holes at top left. Else, fine. Together with a USPS "Receipt for Registered Article" and "Return Receipt" slip, both signed by George Dyer. Also included is a copy of General George S. Patton's 1944 Christmas Card and the Prayer, photographed above one another on 8-1/4 inch high by 6-1/2 inch wide glossy paper. There are staple holes at top left, else near fine. In 1944, General George S. Patton sent out a Christmas Card to 250,000 soldiers. The card combined a holiday message on the recto with a weather-request prayer written by Chief Chaplin Fr. James H. O'Neil on the verso. "To each officer and soldier in the Third United States Army, I wish a Merry Christmas. I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty, and skill in battle." The American writer and wine expert Charles R. Codman (1893-1956) saw combat as a pilot in France during the First World War. Reenlisting as a major in 1942, he served as a French language translator to accompany the Anglo-American invasion of French North Africa, Operation Torch. While serving in that capacity, he met Patton who asked him to serve as his aide-de-camp. He was one of Patton's staff officers to receive Soviet military awards when the Third Army and the Red Army linked up at the end of the war. The author of the substantial official illustrated unit history "XII Corps: Spearhead of Patton's Third Army", Lieutenant Colonel George Dyer (1903-1978) served as combat liaison officer and special assistant to the chief of staff for the XII U.S. Army Corps in WWII as the corps pushed from northern France, through Europe into Germany and Czechoslovakia. Dyer served under the command of Generals Manson S. Eddy and Stafford LeRoy Irwin.
