Whether the Frank Miller company perceived the irony of their company publishing an edition of Anna Sewell's anti - animal cruelty novel, "Black Beauty , is not to be known; but the fact that a company which produced harness dressings, soaps, and oils, as well as carriage oil, issued this particular work is certainly ironic. There were numerous editions of the famous novel already on the market . so why not take advantage of the story's immense popularity. It was strictly a promotional opportunity for the Frank Miller Company. I'm sure it was appreciated by recipients of the book. On the front cover is a lovely picture of a young girl hugging the neck of a beautiful horse - she has long brown hair and a red dress , and a red bonnet with blue ostrich feathers. She is looking sweetly over her shoulder directly at anyone looking at the book. The title on the title page is "Black Beauty: His Grooms and Companions". The title on the cover is "Black Beauty and Country Roads". The cover title refers to an additional work included at the end of the book : "Bad Country Roads - A Few Facts in Favor of Making Them Good" by Charles C. McBride, who was the Editor of the Elizabeth N.J. "Daily Enquirer". Just prior to Mr. McBrides article is a review of "Black Beauty" by John Codman, which appeared in the "New York Commercial Advertiser" ************************************* The rear cover, the insides of both the front and rear covers and the last three pages of the book are taken up with advertisements for the products of the Frank Miller company. Front and rear covers are printed in color; the insides of the cover are printed in two tone black and pink; the ads on the last three pages are printed in black. The product on the rear cover . contributing to the irony . is Frank Miller's Harness Dressing (Sold by Harness and Saddlery Houses). At the top, above a picture of a can containing the product, is a two wheeled carriage, drawn by four horses in single file; on the blankets covering each horse is a word which spelled out collectively reads "Frank Miller's Harness Dressing" What is pictured is exactly that which Black Beauty was trying to escape! The story is announced on the title page as "The Uncle Tom's Cabin" of the Horse. This is a very nice specimen, of museum quality : Bright and Attractive with moderate signs of handling. The rear cover displays a couple of small stains near the foot . surface rub is modest . the colors are bright and attractive. / BINDING - The covers have pulled away a bit, exposing the staples, and their attachment must be considered tender. As to the text-block, no leaves are detached or loose, but considering the nature of the paper, the whole should be considered fragile. N° de ref. del artículo 475
