Paperback. Condición: New. Reissue. The Christmas Rebellion (1831-2) saw the uprising of 60,000 Jamaican slaves, many of them followers of one Baptist preacher. Initially intended only as a peaceful strike, it escalated as estates were burned down and plantation owners killed. This 1832 pamphlet details the violence and persecution directed against nonconformists and missionaries, who were regarded as having been sympathetic towards the revolt. The materials were published by William Knibb, a Baptist minister, who in 1832 was summoned to appear before parliamentary committees investigating the state of the Caribbean colonies. His evidence and the rebellion itself are regarded as having quickened the pace of emancipation in Jamaica. The documents are reissued here with an 1837 narrative by James Williams, a youth who became an apprentice under the system that replaced slavery. He describes how conditions for former slaves were little improved, with many instances of harsh treatment and unjust imprisonment.

24pp, caption title (as issued). Untrimmed, uncut gatherings. Very Good plus. This pamphlet is an eye-witnesses report of attacks on Baptist Missions and Missionaries by armed white gangs opposed to Emancipation. The mobs included British officers and British "Law preservers and Justices of the Peace." The Baptists' encouragement of Emancipation was well-known. Resentment built among those who concluded that the Missionaries sought to "deprive us of our property." Emancipation "cannot fail to create a servile war of too horrible a nature to contemplate." Confessions of mob leaders are printed, as are reports of courts martial of slaves, and other contemporary reports. Ragatz attributes authorship to William Knibb, a resident minister who performed missionary work to the black population. He "proceeded to England to lay their cause before the English public and became a powerful factor in bringing about the passage of the emancipation act in 1833" [Ragatz]. FIRST EDITION. Ragatz 356. Sabin 35577. LCP 3587. Not in Work, Blockson, Dumond, Eberstadt.

First edition. 24pp. pamphlet. First and last pages detached. Some fray to fore-edges. Baptist Missionaries in Jamaica. London, A non-conformist missionary, Knibb travelled to Jamaica in 1825 as a replacement for his brother, Thomas. Knibb initially taught at a school in Kingston before moving on to Savanna la Mar in 1829 and later Falmouth. Tensions on the island had begun in 1823 with the improvement in the conditions of slaves. British calls for the further amelioration coincided with a slave rebellion and the strife broke out just after Christmas, 1831. The white colonists blamed the missionaries and Knibb was among the number arrested and threatened with death. This pamphlet recounts the entire event in detail.
