'A pleasure to read' Mieko Kawakami'Subtle, precise and deft' Lucy Caldwell'Remarkable and devastating' Senaa AhmadIchiyo Higuchi, Japan's first professional female author, wrote about daily life with unprecedented intimacy and honesty. This new translation of her finest stories showcases the profound sensitivity, lyrical eye and classical elegance of a revered Japanese writer.Vividly evoking the colourful festivals and salty street banter of Tokyo's turn-of-the-century red-light district, delicately eliciting its inhabitants' quiet yearning and regret, Higuchi introduces us to children losing their innocence, working-class women losing their livelihoods, and teahouse courtesans losing their hearts. In her clear-eyed vision of the world, longing and memory are what save us.Part of the Pushkin Press Classics series: timeless storytelling by icons of literature, hand-picked from around the globe.Translated by Bryan Karetnyk.Ichiyo Higuchi (1872-1896) was born into a prosperous family whose fortunes declined sharply over the course of her childhood. In an effort to shore up the family finances, Higuchi began publishing her short stories, which quickly earned her a reputation as a major new writer. Over a brief period she wrote some twenty-one stories, thousands of poems and an extensive diary. She died of tuberculosis shortly after the beginning of this brilliant literary career, aged only twenty-four. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This new translation of the best stories by Ichiyo Higuchi showcases the pioneering author's profound sensitivity and lyrical eye. The crystalline beauty of falling snow is a painful reminder of lost innocence; three children growing up on the fringes of Tokyo's red-light district enjoy a last summer of freedom before adulthood and its compromises overtake them; a discontented serving maid and a prodigal son find their transgressions can be mutually beneficial; and a man's passion for an indifferent teahouse courtesan becomes so consuming that he is willing to sacrifice everything to it - his job, his family, perhaps even his life. Rarely translated into English, but revered in Japan for the purity of her classical language and her status as the country's first professional woman writer, Ichiyo Higuchi drew on her own short life in a poor Tokyo neighbourhood to inspire her work. With immense delicacy of phrase and feeling, and vivid evocations of the colourful festivals and salty street banter that mask unspoken yearning and disappointed hopes, she transmits both the beauty and the struggle of working-class women's lives in turn-of-the-century Japan. In her clear-eyed vision of the world, longing and memory may be the only solace. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - A new translation of 5 remarkable stories from Japan's first professional woman writer, chronicling the lives of the turn-of-the-century working class This collection of short stories, several never before translated, brings the work of Ichiyo Higuchi to an English readership for the first time. In her brief life, cut short by tuberculosis at the age of 24, she became the first woman in Japan to make a living as a writer. A major figure of turn-of-the-century Meiji-era literature, she left behind her a collection of short stories, poems and diaries that turned creative attention to the lives of Tokyo's poor and broke a path for women and realist fiction writers alike. In the title story, 'Troubled Waters', courtesan Oriki dismisses a lover who can no longer afford to pay for her favors - but when his obsession continues the consequences for both, and for his wife and child, will turn tragic. 'Growing Pains', one of the single most famous short stories in Japanese literature, depicts the coming of age of a group of children in Tokyo's red-light district. Lively Midori, serious Nobu and hardworking Shota find childhood and its freedoms coming to a close over the course of a season, bookended by summer and winter festivals whose events prove decisive for each of their lives. These and 3 other stories are rendered in a fresh translation by Bryan Karetnyk, giving English readers access to Higuchi's sensitive moral awareness, earthy street humor, and elegiac rendering of life's inevitable compromises.…

Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.…
