Appendices are of aircraft and on the Department of Defense designation system for military aircraft, 1963. Robert D. Archer was a respected aviation author, photographer and aircraft designer. Bob entered the aircraft industry in 1942 as a design engineer at Napiers. He was active in the Royal Observer Corps of the RAF. Bob left England to join Canadair in 1954, and then came to California in 1956, to work at Northrop on fighter aircraft. In 1964, he joined Douglas Aircraft (later McDonnell-Douglas). He completed his career as manager on the fly-by-wire control system of the C-17 Globemaster III. He retired in 1991. Bob was the author of numerous articles and books on aviation.
