Añadir al carritoFirst Edition. Inscribed by Pickard on front endpaper: "Rev. Herbert Loubard with regards Samuel T. Pickard", dated July 25, 1904, and 3pp. A.L.s. from Pickard to Loubard and printed "Note to page 61" adhered to rear pastedown. Octavo (18.5cm); brown cloth-covered boards with titling stamped in gilt on spine and front cover; top…-edge gilt; 6+4+115pp; black-and-white photographic (halftone) plate frontispiece, with three black-and-white photographic (halftone) plates. Modest shelf-wear with rubbing to corners, light soil to upper edge of textblock, tape residue and off-setting to recto of front endpaper and front flyleaf, and two tiny marginal tears to title page; Very Good. A known forgery. This alleged diary was recovered forty years after Hawthorne's death and given to an acquaintance from his youth, William Symmes, who released excerpts to a local paper. Pickard then edited the entries for this edition, in hopes the complete diary would eventually surface, but shortly thereafter included the disclaimer "Note on page 61" that stated Symmes portrayed his own experiences as Hawthorne's. Pickard's later confessions and handwritten book inscriptions suggest far more was fraudulent, and plates were destroyed for their lack of authenticity (CLARKE, G15). This copy includes an A.L.s. from Pickard with his confession on his doubts about the diary and his wishes to meet with Loubard. Pickard's inscription and "Note to page 61" lend importance to this copy. BROWNE, A Bibliography of Nathaniel Hawthorne, p.103. CLARK, Pittsburgh Series in Bibliography, G15. BLANCK, Bibliography of American Literature, p.34. [89696].

Añadir al carrito28 pp. An election sermon preached at a time when the victory of the American Revolution was still fresh in the minds of the people. As Symmes noted: "Whilst the War continued, many things concurred to unite these States in their common defence, to strengthen the confederacy, and hold them together. They have now, as it were, en…tered on a new stage of existence." Later, Symmes sounds a decidely civil libertarian chord: "It being the sole end of government to secure the civil happiness of the community, (and, as far as may be, of every individual) it is fit and proper that the laws by which men submit to be governed, should be as few, clear, and easy in their application as possible. For laws themselves, when needlessly multiplied, become a vexatious and intolerable burden." Amen. Evans: 19269. Sabin: 94123. Vail: p. 22. Disbound. Foxing, especially to half-title. Small hole on pages 25/26 with loss of a few letters. Some staining but overall a good example.

Añadir al carritoHalf title, 28pp. Stitched. Some margin spotting, else Very Good. Symmes warns that "the very existence of free republican States depends upon the reign of justice.Nothing can atone for the want of it in the legislative, judicial, and executive departments. [I]n a good constitution of government there is no absolute power but th…at of the laws." Those laws should not be "needlessly multiplied," for they then "become a vexatious and intolerable burden." The "long and arduous contest for freedom and independence" gives America the "singular" opportunity "to improve human nature, and produce the greatest degree of moral worth." Evans 19269.
