Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Long before tourism dominated Floridas coastline, the state was home to dozens of commercial fisheries and ethnically diverse communities of rugged individuals who made their living from the sea.In A Pioneer Son at Sea, a celebrated marine biologist vividly recounts his early experiences fis…hing both coasts of the peninsula during the Great Depression and World War II. Here are vanished scenes from old Florida: gill-netting for mackerel off Jupiter, the early days of charterboat fishing for sailfish out of Stuart and Boynton, the snapper fleet at Carrabelle, sponge-diving at Tarpon Springs, the oyster fishery at Crystal River, and mullet fishing from airboats at Flamingo.Outsized personalities inhabit these pagescrackers, conchs, now-legendary charterboatmen, Greek spongers, and Cuban vivero captains. These portraits of a bygone era are also remarkable tales of formative chapters in the life of a scientist who later worked tirelessly to preserve our dwindling marine resources. A celebrated marine biologist vividly recounts his early experiences fishing both coasts of the Florida peninsula during the Great Depression and World War II. Outsized personalities inhabit these pagescrackers, conchs, now-legendary charterboatmen, Greek spongers, and Cuban vivero captains. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Near Fine. Bulletin Volume 230. Paperback in original blue wrappers, faded spine. Information about the magnitude and geographic distribution of mammalian diversity in Neotropical lowland rainforests is important for evaluating research and conservation priorities in Central and South America. Although rele…vant inventory data are rapidly accumulating in the literature, real site-to-site diversity differences are hard to identify because many confounding factors can affect the size and composition of faunal lists. Herein the author?s assessed the available information about Neotropical rainforest mammal diversity and suggest guidelines for future work by reviewing inventory methods, documenting and discussing faunal lists from ten localities, and summarizing geographic range data to predict diversity patterns that can be tested by field and museum research.

Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. The definitive volume on opossums, a group of ecologically and scientifically important mammals, covering natural history, evolution, behavior, and biogeography.Opossums are the most diverse and ecologically important group of New World marsupials, although only the Virginia opossum is famil…iar to North American residents. In fact, many species of opossums are found in Neotropical rainforests, savannas, and other habitats, where they are key participants in food webs and other ecological relationships. One species, the short-tail opossum (Monodelphis domestica), has recently become a model organism for biomedical researchers. Eclipsed in the public imagination by their Australian relatives, opossums remained for many years a somewhat obscure group, of interest primarily to taxonomists and students of mammalian reproduction. While thousands of scientific articles have appeared in recent years on opossum systematics, morphology, behavior, physiology, genetics, and ecology, this important but widely scattered literature has never been effectively summarizeduntil now. In Opossums, the first book-length treatment of these fascinating organisms, recognized authorities Robert S. Voss and Sharon A. Jansa synthesize a wide range of available information about the diversity, comparative biology, and natural history of the opossum. Peering into every biological facet of the lives of these long-neglected mammals, the volume includes introductory chapters explaining the paleontological and biogeographic context for opossum evolution an overview of the extant fauna, which includes over 100 species in 18 genera a section devoted to opossum phenotypes: morphology, physiology, and behavior detailed information on opossum natural history, including habitats, diets, predators, and parasites in-depth and novel interpretations of opossums' adaptive radiation in a phylogenetic contextIntended for undergraduate biology majors, graduate students, and research professionals, this coherent and original portrait of opossums will be of particular interest to mammalogists, evolutionary biologists, and Neotropical field biologists as well as biomedical researchers working with Monodelphis domestica as a model organism. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
