In the 1990s an academic interest aroused from certain quarters to locate the Congress party in the context of the three trends in Indian politics like mandal mandir and market. This study focuses on the policies and strategies of the Congress in relation to its emphasis on the role of the developmental state and its transition towards market oriented development in the 1990s. The Congress party which developed an intrinsic relationship between the developmental state and market for its mobilization strength and domination in Indian politics over a period of time was at the receiving end of the crisis. Since the market oriented economic reforms attacked the developmental state it contributed to the de institutionalization of the party. By shifting the developmental strategy from the state oriented to a market oriented one great harm has been done to the Congress party and its legitimacy over Indian politics. During the second generation reforms under the BJP led NDA government the Congress party underwent a process of introspection and reiteration. Then it realized that the policies of socialism and social justice which were anathema for it during the economic reforms under the Rao regime have the potentiality to mobilize the alienated social groups and thereby reinvent its space in Indian politics. 300 pp.

Most… of the states in Northeast India is largely dominated by Christianity and homeland for multiple ethnic communities. Inspite the existence of ethnoregional political parties and organisations and everyday ethnic assertions and selfdetermination, the national political parties played a vital role in the electoral politics of these states. Though the Congress party which scripted history in the politics of these states for decades since the formation of many Northeastern states, in the aftermath 2014 general election, the Hindu nationalist politics assumed a centre stage reducing the space of the Congress. These articles capture the intricacies of emerging politics in the northeastern states which would be a guiding light for the researchers and common readers on India's Northeast. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: V. Bijukumar is currently Associate Professor at Centre for Political Studies, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Prior to joining JNU, he taught Mizoram University, Aizawl and North Eastern Hill University, Shillong. His areas of Specialization include: Comparative Politics, Political Economy of Development, Democratization and North East Studies. V. Bijukumar has a distinctive academic career as he holds first rank and gold medal both in his B.A. and M.A. in Political Science and has completed his doctoral degree from Centre for Political Studies, JNU. The dramatic rise of China and India in particular, in terms of their economy and military capabilities, has brought about a paradigm shift in terms of thinking of world politics that is coupled with the decline of the US' hegemonic status. Randall Schweller points out that there have been arguments that support the fact of the increasing potential for security competition and war between the US and China and on the other hand he also directs the reader to the optimist's argument that the transition of power would be smooth and evolutionary where there will be efforts towards accommodating these changes that are occurring in the international system. He also points out that there will be efforts by great powers to accept these changes through restraint, reciprocity, cooperation and establish a mutually acceptable order that would benefit all (Schweller, 2011: 285). These complexities make it both interesting as well as a serious concern in terms of peace and security in the world.
