Mit dem vorliegenden Band wollen Freunde, Wegbegleiter und Schüler Reimut Jochimsen ehren - einen Wissenschaftler, den es schon frühzeitig zur Politik zog, der seinem wissenschaftlichen Fach aber stets treu geblieben ist.Nach dem Studium in Bonn und Freiburg folgten 1959 die Promotion und 1964 die Habilitation. Mit 31 Jahren erhielt er einen Ruf an die Universität Kiel; 1969 wurde er dort zum Rektor designatus gewählt. Doch dann kam der Wechsel, der Drang zum Politischen obsiegte: Jochimsen übernahm im Bundeskanzleramt die Leitung der Planungsabteilung. Ihm oblag es, die vielfach unkoordiniert arbeitenden und vornehmlich ihre eigenen politischen Konzepte verfolgenden Ressorts auf eine Querschnittsplanung "einzuschwören". 1973 wechselte er als Staatssekretär in das Bundesministerium für Bildung und Wissenschaft. 1978 rief ihn Johannes Rau als Wissenschaftsminister in sein Kabinett, gefolgt (ab 1980) von einer 10jährigen Tätigkeit als Wirtschaftsminister; mit seinem Namen verbinden sich u. a. die "Zukunftsinitiative Montanregion" und die "Zukunftsinitiative Nordrhein-Westfalen", mit deren Hilfe der Strukturwandel in Nordrhein-Westfalen vorangetrieben werden konnte. Selbst Kritiker bescheinigten Reimut Jochimsen, daß er u. a. mit technologiepolitischen Anstößen wesentlich zur Beschleunigung längst fälliger Anpassungsprozesse beigetragen hat und sich energisch und erfolgreich für die nordrhein-westfälische Industrie - auch im Ausland - engagierte.Als Präsident der Landeszentralbank von Nordrhein-Westfalen (ab 1990) profilierte er sich als engagierter Verfechter der Stabilitätspolitik; er befürwortet durchaus das Anliegen einer Europäischen Wirtschafts- und Währungsunion, doch Fehlern und Unzulänglichkeiten bei ihrer Realisierung will er vorbeugen. Mit seiner abwägenden Distanz hat er sich auch auf internationalem Parkett einen Namen gemacht.Läßt man die Arbeiten von Reimut Jochimsen Revue passieren, so zeigt sich von den ersten Arbeiten zur Wohlstandsökonomik über die zu Rolle und Bedeutung der Infrastruktur, die Neukonzeptionierung der politischen Planung bis hin zur letzten Monographie, der zweiten Auflage der "Perspektiven der europäischen Wirtschafts- und Währungsunion", daß es bei ihnen im Kern immer auch um Entgrenzung, die Auflösung von "Grenzen" geht: Welche Schwierigkeiten entstehen durch Entgrenzung? Wie zweckmäßig ist und welche Vorteile bringt sie? Mit welchen ökonomischen und politischen Kosten kann man sich ihr entziehen? Der vorliegende Band orientiert sich unter diesem Leitthema an den Stationen des Lebensweges von Reimut Jochimsen: Nach Würdigungen des Politikers Jochimsen befaßt sich der zweite Teil mit Themen der Regionalwissenschaft. Aspekte der politischen Planung, der Wissenschaftspolitik und der Wirtschaftspolitik sind Gegenstand der folgenden Teile. Im sechsten Abschnitt geht es schließlich um Fragen der Geldpolitik, dem sich als besonderer Aspekt die Europäische Wirtschafts- und Währungsunion anschließt. In this context the principal challenge is to reduce the multifaceted and sometimes abundant quantitative information about the business cycle to such qualitative statements in an efficient way. For more than six years this task was the focus of the project 'Multivariate determination and analysis of business cycles' within the SFB 475 'Reduction of complexity in multivariate data structures', funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).The necessity for complexity reduction is, of course, not unique to business cycle analysis but is studied in many fields and in a number of ways. This broad interest in the reduction of problem dimensionality and in the appropriate combination of data and of theory caused the RWI Essen and the Statistical Department of the University of Dortmund in January 2002 to hold a workshop at the RWI Essen where the findings of this and similar projects were presented and discussed. The presentpublication collects revised versions of the papers presented at this workshop.
