Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good+. First Edition. Americana and American History, Law and Legal History, Most Recent Listing; Autograph; 63 pages; Publisher's blue buckram, spine lettered in gilt. Title page printed in red, gray and black. Nearly fine, in a clean dust jacket which shows a si…ngle, minor, closed tear at the top margin of the rear panel. Inscribed in ink by the editor and annotator on the front free-endpaper: "For Dr. Alfred F. Way, an old / and good friend. Had Abraham / Lincoln not been in Kalamazoo / 85 years ago today, this book / would not have been edited / by [signed] Tom Starr / 8/27/41." Lincoln made a speech supporting the Presidential candidacy of John C. Freemont in Kalamazoo on August 28, 1856. Freemont was the first nominee of the newly-born Republican party. Lincoln made the point that a vote for either of the opposing candidates [James Buchanan, or former President Millard Fillmore] was, in effect, a vote for slavery. Nicolay and Hay, in their standard edition of the Complete Works of Abraham Lincoln, made the following assertion: "In the canvass of 1856 Mr. Lincoln made over fifty speeches, noo one of which, so far as he remembers, was put into print. " According to Thomas Starr's prefaced, Lincoln's Kalamazoo address was transcribed by a newspaper reporter, making use of Gregg shorthand, and published in the Detroit 'Daily Advertiser' the day following Lincoln's speech. Thomas Starr asserts that this newspaper survived in a single copy only, housed in the Burton Historical Collection in the Detroit Public Library. For context, it may be useful to reflect that a day less than three months before Lincoln had addressed the crowd standing on the locally reknowned "Indian Mound" in Bronson Park -- he made his infamous "Lost Speech" on May 29, 1856, in Bloomington, Illinois. Traditional historicans thought of that famous speech by Lincoln as lost because it was such an impassioned condemnation of slavery -- so strong and engrossing that reporters neglected to take notes. The present Kalamazoo speech seems to have been neither noticed nor discussed by historians until around 1930 when Thomas Starr and two other researchers found it in the files of the 'Daily Advertiser. Starr agreed to postpone his publication of the speech in favor of a book then in preparation by his friend, Stephen Gilchrist ["Mr. Lincoln of Illinois"]. Mostly due to the great depression, the Gilchrist book did not appear. This is the Kalamazoo speech's first appearance in a book, following publication in a Sunday newspaper supplement in 1934, and a partial text published by Starr in the 'Michigan Bell' -- a publication for the employees of the Michigan Bell Telephone Company, in 1936. The other component of this 1941 book is presented as "the first published life of Abraham Lincoln, written by Joseph J. Lewis and published unsigned in the Chester County 'Times, ' at West Chester, Pennsylvania, February 11, 1860." It may be useful to recall that Lincoln was not so well known as the other politicians who sought the Presidential nomination of the new Republican party. It was thought that he required support in a large Eastern state -- New York and Ohio were rightly thought to have been pledged to others. Indeed, most credit support in Pennsylvania as having secured the nomination for Lincoln in 1860. Illustrations in this 1941 volume include both vintage and modern photographs of the Indian Mound in Kalamazoo and a double-page facsimile of the letter by Lincoln to "H[ezikiah] G. Wells" -- chairman of the executive committee in charge of the Kalamazoo meeting. Lincoln is thought to have spent the night in Wells' house, which was conveniently directly across the street from Bronson Park. Editor Starr writes that the Wells house was "hardly more than a stone's throw from the old Indian mound atop of which was erected the temporary stand from which Lincoln spoke. " The circumstances leading up.

Cloth. Condición: Very good. ALS. Octavo, [4pp]. Previously folded, glue remnant along top edge. Several folds of the letter are weakened, some partially separated. Small paper loss at intersecting fold, with archival tissue repair. The letter is addressed in Lincoln's hand, with "Springfield" and "Paid 3" stamped on cover. Hous…ed in custom folding folio, quarter blue morocco, blue cloth, title in gilt on the spine, illustration of Lincoln on the front pastedown. This letter concerns the case of Kemper v. Adams & Bovey, a land dispute in Freeport, Illinois. Lincoln was retained by Adams and Bovey, who after a series of losses and appeals, prevailed in March 1858, by appealing to U.S. Circuit Court of Northern Illinois. Full letter reads: "Springfield, June 27. 1853. / Hon. T. J. Turner: / Dear Sir: Your letter of the 20th. reached me, day-before yesterday. I had, the day before, written to Adams to be on hand with his witnesses- but, at the request of Judge Logan, who is Kemper's attorney, I put in a Post-script, saying to Adams, if he was agreed, the cause should be continued over the summer term. On subsequent reflection, I rather wish Adams may not agree. I have the case fresh in my mind, and therefore wish to keep it going till it is finished. I have already drafted a Bill of Exceptions, and my plan is to put the common lawsuit through the forms of a second trial, up to a verdict (which must be against us, under Judge D's view of the law) except, & save all the points, and then, before judgment, file our Bill and get an injunction. I shall begin preparing a Bill this afternoon, which I which I wish to file during the evening term; and I believe I will do this, Mr Adams must come down to swear to the Bill. In no event can we be ready for proof in the chancery suit at this time, so that we will need no other witness than the one that was here last summer. I wrote Mr Adams about a Register's certificate & if he can find one or two missing tax receipts, let him bring them. I should be glad to see you & shake you by the hand; but as there is no contested jury question, I scarcely think you need be at the trouble & expense of coming. All the law questions which can arise at this term, the Judge has already decided. Very truly yours A. Lincoln." Provenance: Originally the property of Claribel Mitchell of Freeport, Illinois, a principal at the Lincoln School until 1916. The letter was sold at auction by the American Art Association on January 30, 1923, to Mr. George A. Ball of Muncie, Indiana, the namesake of the Ball Mason Jar Company. This letter was published in The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln by Roy Basler, (New Brunswick, NJ: Rutgers University Press, 1953), 2:199-200. A two-page handwritten letter from Abraham Lincoln to fellow attorney, Thomas J. Turner, of Freeport, Illinois, addressing their future legal strategy since ".the Judge has already decided." The letter is dated June 27, 1853, and is self-addressed (ilustrador). Signed.

6 vols, modern green cloth, gilt spine-titles, all edges marbled, 4to. xi, [1], 766, [2], + [8], 871 + 1071 + 932 + 756 + [8], 461 pp and unpaginated index of approximately [258 ]pp. A sturdily-bound set with an interesting and strong association to the founders of Christian Socialism. The text is Henry Ellis's reconstruction of… the unexpurgated 1587 second (revised and enlarged) edition, which was the edition used by Shakespeare for many of his plays. From the Oxford Handbook to Holinshed's Chronicles: "the Chronicles were at once the crowning achievement of Tudor historiography and the principal source for contemporary playwrights and poets, above all Shakespeare, Spenser, and Daniel. " From the publisher's 'Advertisement': "From the introduction - ".it has been a Law with the Publishers, not to alter a single Letter, but to print the Work with the utmost Fidelity from the best preceding Edition, with the Author's own Orthography, and with his marginal Notes. The only Liberty taken, has been to use the Types of the present Day, instead of the old English Letter of the Time of Elizabeth." Volume I has a presentation leaf bound in bearing a manuscript inscription to 'Revd Fred[eric]k D. Maurice' on the occasion of his second marriage, (July 1849) with 18 signatures below. This presentee is John Frederick Denison Maurice (1805-1872), Anglican theologian, one of the founders of Christian Socialism and co-founder and first principal of the Working Men's College, now 'Europe's oldest extant centre for adult education'. The signatories comprise most of the other founders and earliest supporters of Christian Socialism, including such names as John Malcolm [Forbes] Ludlow, Thomas Hughes (author of Tom Brown's Schooldays) and Charles Kingsley (author of The Water-Babies). Library stamps of the Working Mens College in each volume on lower edges of text block, and typically about 5 pages, a number stamped on each title-page, minor wear to edges and joints, contents mildly agetoned with just a few leaves being substantially darkened, scattered foxing, overall a Good set.
