Holocaust and Genocide Studies is a major forum for scholarship on the Holocaust and other genocides, Holocaust and Genocide Studies is an independent, peer-reviewed international journal featuring research articles, interpretive essays, and book reviews in the social sciences and humanities. The articles and reviews in Holocaust and Genocide Studies reflect the opinions of their authors. They do not reflect the opinions of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The listing of a publication in the bibliography of "Recently Published Works" does not indicate endorsement by the Museum. Using four Holocaust-era railway cars displayed in four distinct museological settings, this articles examines Holocaust symbolism and memorialization. The author investigates the relationship between religion and the Holocaust by closely analyzing these boxcar displays in their institutional contexts. Considering the placement and presentation of the railcars, the author argues that each railcar defines a distinct memorial ideology: initiatory, integrative, ambivalent, and monumental. By correlating the four ideologies developed here with four classic theological responses to the Holocaust, the author offers a typology for analyzing Holocaust memorialization. Oren Baruch Stier, Ph.D. is Assistant Vice Provost for Combating Antisemitism and Professor of Religious Studies at Florida International University in Miami, FL. He also serves as Director of the Global Jewish Studies Program in the Steven J. Green School of International & Public Affairs and directs FIU's Holocaust & Genocide Studies Program, which facilitates teaching and learning about the Holocaust and other genocides through a certificate program, teacher training, community outreach, faculty research, and more. Stier is author of two books, Committed to Memory: Cultural Mediations of the Holocaust (2003) and Holocaust Icons: Symbolizing the Shoah in History and Memory (2015) and co-editor of Religion, Violence, Memory, and Place (2006). His research addresses Holocaust education, Jewish memory, Holocaust testimony, and the material and visual culture of the Shoah and its remembrance. Stier has been a Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies research fellow at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and was the Guest Curator for a Wolfsonian-FIU teaching gallery exhibition, "Race and Visual Culture under National Socialism." Most recently, he guest-edited, with Laura Levitt, a special issue of MAVCOR Journal, "Tending to Holocaust Objects: Interrogating the Sacred." In 2020-21 Stier served on a Florida Department of Education expert group writing new statewide standards for Holocaust education. He regularly leads single- and multi-day workshops to educators on teaching the Holocaust. Dr. Stier is a recipient of the 2026 ISGAP Faculty Fellowship Training Program: Combatting Holocaust Distortion and Global Antisemitism. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - How is contemporary public consciousness of the Holocaust shaped and communicated How is commitment to its memory expressed and engendered This book offers a close and critical analysis of a range of cultural activities that mediate the Holocaust for a public increasingly distant from the events of World War II. Oren Baruch Stier argues that the manner in which those events are committed to memory, coupled with the fervent dedication to memory exhibited by many people and institutions, produces distinct memorial mediations of the Shoah. Stier discusses how these memorializations emerge, paying attention to the ways cultural memory is embodied individually, institutionally, and technologically. He defines and examines four modes of mediation: iconic, videotestimonial, museological, and ritual-ceremonial. In each context, he analyzes how Holocaust memory is inscribed, framed, displayed, and performed through a variety of media in a range of settings. Topics include the use of Holocaust-era railway cars, Art Spiegelman's Maus volumes, novels by Emily Prager, Martin Amis, and Elie Wiesel, and a CD-ROM that incorporates excerpts from Holocaust survivor testimonies. Institutions examined range from Washington's U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum to Los Angeles's Museum of Tolerance, from Yale's Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies to the Visual History Foundation created by Steven Spielberg, to the international teen pilgrimage that is the March of the Living. In the end, Committed to Memory asks what role forgetting can and does play in the memorial landscape, demonstrating how critical attention to our memorial investments, and to the mechanics and media of memory's construction and transmission, can uncover what is both gained and lost in these commitments.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Sites of violence often provoke conflicts over memorialization. These conflicts provide insight into the construction and use of memory as a means of achieving public recognition of past wrongs. In this groundbreaking collection, scholars of religious studies, sociology, history, and political science, as well as African, Caribbean, Jewish, and Native American studies, examine the religious memorialization of violent acts that are linked to particular sites. Supported by the essays gathered here, the editors argue that memory is essential to religion and, conversely, that religion is inherent in memory. Other books have considered memory and violence, or religion and place-this collection is the first to discuss the intersection of all four. Contributors are David Chidester, James H. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The Holocaust has bequeathed to contemporary society a cultural lexicon of intensely powerful symbols, a vocabulary of remembrance that we draw on to comprehend the otherwise incomprehensible horror of the Shoah. Engagingly written and illustrated with more than forty black-and-white images, Holocaust Icons probes the history and memory of four of these symbolic relics left in the Holocaust's wake. Jewish studies scholar Oren Stier offers in this volume new insight into symbols and the symbol-making process, as he traces the lives and afterlives of certain remnants of the Holocaust and their ongoing impact. Stier focuses in particular on four icons: the railway cars that carried Jews to their deaths, symbolizing the mechanics of murder; the Arbeit Macht Frei ('work makes you free') sign over the entrance to Auschwitz, pointing to the insidious logic of the camp system; the number six million that represents an approximation of the number of Jews killed as well as mass murder more generally; and the persona of Anne Frank, associated with victimization. Stier shows how and why these icons-an object, a phrase, a number, and a person-have come to stand in for the Holocaust: where they came from and how they have been used and reproduced; how they are presently at risk from a variety of threats such as commodification; and what the future holds for the memory of the Shoah. In illuminating these icons of the Holocaust, Stier offers valuable new perspective on one of the defining events of the twentieth century. He helps readers understand not only the Holocaust but also the profound nature of historical memory itself. Englisch.…
