In China entwickelt sich eine neue Mittelschicht in den letzten Jahrzehnten seit der marktwirtschaftlichen Reform in den 1970er Jahren durch tiefgehenden gesellschaftlichen Wandel und marktorientierten Wirtschaftszuwachs, die jedoch wesentlich von dem westlichen bürgerlichen Bild zu unterscheiden ist, vor allem in der Rolle bei der Demokratisierung des jeweiligen Landes, und deswegen in den Mittelpunkt der gesellschaftlichen und politischen Diskursen rückt. In China gibt es bisher keinerlei Indikatoren dafür, dass die ausbreitende neue Mittelschicht eine demokratische Transition vorantreibt, was gegen die gängigen Theorien spricht. Es stellen sich in diesem Kontext ferner die Fragen, inwiefern die westlichen politikwissenschaftlichen Überlegungen zum Zusammenhang zwischen der Entwicklung der Mittelschicht und dem politisch-demokratischen Wandel, die von den westlichen Wohlfahrtsstaaten und Zivilgesellschaften ausgehen, sich auf China, ein industriell nachkommendes, nicht demokratisches Land, anwenden lassen; warum Chinas Mittelschicht nicht als Triebkraft des demokratischen Wandels angesehen werden kann; und nicht zuletzt, ob es neue Entwicklungen bezüglich der demokratischen Einstellungen unter der Mittelschicht gibt. In der Arbeit erfolgt zuerst eine skizzenhafte Darstellung der theoretischen Ansätze zum Zusammenhang zwischen Wirtschaftswachstum und Demokratisierung. Vor allem die Handelsstädte in Küstengebieten erlebten sowohl am Anfang der Modernisierungswelle im 19. Jahrhundert als auch seit der marktwirtschaftlichen Reform in den 1970er Jahren durch den Zuzug von westlichen Investitionen und Ideologien eine immense politische, gesellschaftliche sowie wirtschaftliche Entwicklung.
