The military did recruit military members to be artists…, and Milford Zornes was one of those who was selected and designated as an official army artist. Most of the other artists that were recruited were stationed in Europe. Thus, Milford's art and experience was extensive and unique. There were other civilians and enlisted personnel there to record the action for newspapers and magazines (including military newspapers), notably Life Magazine.

This book tells the story of artist Milford Zornes during WWII, as he began his tour of duty at March Field in Riverside, California, and continuing through the two years he spent in China, Burma and India (CBI). As 80 years have passed, many of the details of his time during the war have been lost, but Milford left a scrapbook and a considerable number of drawings and paintings that give us a good sense of where he was and the wide-ranging subject matter that interested him. In the scrapbook are military orders, letters, v-mails and other documents. Also included in the many things he kept are a large number of photos that he personally took or that he got from other military photographers. Milford's mother also kept a scrapbook with a number of items from his war years. Milford was not assigned to a combat unit as some artists were, nor did he experience combat on the front lines, thus the artwork of his WWII experience are not centered on combat or war scenes. What he recorded were the "behind the scenes" support and services necessary to keep the war effort on track. What he recorded is an invaluable look at what is not normally seen by the public, which is more familiar with actual war scenes, but is so important to soldiers and support staff as they face the acts of war-the critical day-to-day living conditions of American soldiers.
