Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book presents arguments for the existence of God, the divinity of Christ, and the immortality of the soul. The author, an expert in science, contends that many scientific truths demonstrable through mathematics reveal complex and ordered laws that could not have originated by chance. He uses these truths to extrapolate the existence of an intelligent designer. Moreover, he insists that evolution aligns with the scriptural narrative of creation and is, in fact, the working-out of God's design. The author goes on to posit that God's existence and the moral character of the universe are intuitively understood by humans, despite the attempts of some, such as agnostics and atheists, to deny or ignore these truths. He maintains that the human soul is naturally immortal and that the moral battles fought in this life will follow the individual into the next. The author's thoughtful presentation offers readers intellectually stimulating reasons for belief in God and the principles taught by Christianity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

First Edition. Lee, a cousin of the more famous Robert E. Lee, first went to sea at 13, by 1838 he was sailing with Charles Wilkes on his exploring expedition to the Antarctic as first lieutenant aboard the USS 'Peacock'. From 1843 to 1855 Lee commanded coastal survey expeditions studying winds, currents, depths, tides, birds, shoals, and weather patterns, after the discoveries made by Maury, and his "meticulous reports were an important contribution to naval science. In 1854 Congress printed 2,000 copies of his report from a voyage on the USS 'Dolphin' [as here]. In May 1847 he briefly participated in the Mexican War as commander of the USS Washington and was commended by Commodore Matthew Perry for his role in helping capture Fort Iturbide near Vera Cruz In 1860, commanding the USS 'Vandalia', Lee was ordered to join the East Indian Squadron, but at Cape Town, South Africa, on 27 February 1861, he learned of southern secession. Disobeying orders, he sailed back to New York, where he was reprimanded but promptly assigned to the Union's inadequate southern blockade. Only three wooden ships blockaded Charleston through the summer of 1861, and Lee's efforts on the 'Vandalia' were highly praised by the blockade commander, Admiral Garrett Pendergast, after the 'Vandalia' captured two southern ships. In early 1862, as commander of the steamer 'Oneida', he served under Admiral David Farragut in the campaign that captured New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Natchez and threatened Vicksburg. In various engagements Lee performed with both daring and skill, as the 'Oneida' took several hits and suffered numerous casualties. "In July 1862 Lee was promoted to captain, and on 11 August 1862 he assumed command of the North Atlantic Blockade with the rank of acting rear admiral, responsible for stopping Confederate trade along the double coastline of Virginia and North Carolina and their numerous rivers and sounds, cooperating with the army on interior raids, regulating internal trade, and protecting the army's communications. His initial fleet of forty-eight ships, many of them useless, grew to 119 by the end of 1864. He imposed stern discipline and developed effective strategies. He assigned his ships according to the most likely ports of entry, with shallow draft ships close to shore, a second line of heavy ships farther out; and an outside cordon of his fastest ships ready to chase down vessels that might escape the first two lines. In these actions his superior knowledge of the shoals and depths near the inlets was a great advantage. His fleet ultimately captured or destroyed 144 ships" (Elbert B. Smith for ANB).".
