The Company of Pikemen and Musketeers, marching alongside the Lord Mayor's State Coach or standing guard at City events, is one of London's most iconic images. Established just over 100 years ago, but tracing its roots back to the seventeenth century, it is a ceremonial unit of the Honourable Artillery Company (HAC) and is recruited from veterans of the HAC's Army Reserve regiment, the oldest fighting regiment in the British Army. Granted a Royal Warrant by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1955, the Company is tasked to provide a ceremonial bodyguard to the Lord Mayor of the City of London and provides guards for State Banquets at Guildhall, dinners at Mansion House and Livery halls and displays of seventeenth century arms drill at military and public events. This book tells the story of the Company, from the original pikemen and musketeers of the seventeenth century, to the foundation of the modern Company just after the Great War, its involvement in the pageantry of the inter-war years and the onslaught of the Blitz, its formal recognition by Royal Warrant and continuing evolution through 1950s' austerity and 1960s' affluence to the 'end of history' and beyond.Governments and demagogues come and go; monarchs pass from youth to old age. All the time the Company is there, lining the halls of Mansion House and Guildhall like living wallpaper as history passes in front of them. They also serve who only stand and wait.

Includes bibliographical references and index. - Contents: Punishment policies and patterns in Western countries / Michael Tonry -- Three strikes and you're out--it's not cricket : colonization and resistance in Australian sentencing / Arie Freiberg -- The decline of English sentencing and other stories / Andrew Ashworth -- Sentencing and punishment in Finland : the decline of the repressive ideal / Tapio Lappi-Seppälä -- Sentencing and punishment in The Netherlands / Peter J. Frase -- Post-adjudication dispositions in comparative perspective / Hans-Jörg Albrecht -- International standards for sentencing and punishment / Leena Kurki -- International controls on sentencing and punishment / Rod Morgan -- The project of sentencing reform / Andrew von Hirsch. This collection of original essays surveys the evolution of sentencing policies and practices in Western countries over the past twenty-five years. The volume consists of approximately ten essays. Six consider sentencing policy strategies and practices in major western countries, including Australia, England/Wales, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United States. Each is written by a recognized expert from that part of the world. The remaining essays consider developments and subjects that cross national boundaries. Just a few of the subjects touched upon include plea-bargaining, community service and electronic monitoring, standards of use of incarceration, and legal perspectives on sentencing policy developments in western countries. The goal of the book is to provide a range of scholars and students better cross-national knowledge than currently exists of how various countries' sentencing laws and practices differ, when and why they have changed over time, and with what effects. Increasingly, countries are likely to look across nation boundaries for boundaries for solutions to pressing sentencing-policy problems. There exists, however, no scholarly literature on the subject. Condition : very good copy. ISBN 9780195138610. Keywords : RECHT, criminal law *2006-100 criminal law.
