Als Elias Holl 13 Jahre alt geworden war, wurde der Vater sein Lehrherr. 1596 erwarb Elias Holl selbst den Titel eines Maurermeisters. Während einer Italienreise im Jahr 1600 lernte Holl den Stil der Renaissance kennen, der ihn lebenslang prägte. Nach ersten Arbeiten an Schlössern, Stadtpalästen und einer Wallfahrtskapelle wurde Holl von der Reichsstadt Augsburg 1602 zum Stadtwerkmeister berufen. Elias Holl hat seine Heimatstadt während seiner langen Amtszeit maßgeblich umgestaltet und zur Renaissancestadt werden lassen. Holls Augsburger Hauptwerk ist das von ihm geplante, bis 1620 fertiggestellte monumentale Rathaus.Neben einer Reihe Holl'scher Bauten erinnern in Augsburg etliche Darstellungen, Denkmäler sowie der Elias-Holl-Platz beim Rathaus an den Stadtwerkmeister.
