Aunque nació en Madrid, Daniel Urrabieta Vierge pasó en París la mayor parte de su vida, donde se convirtió en uno de los más famosos ilustradores de Europa. Amigo y colaborador habitual, entre otros, de Victor Hugo, alrededor de 1880 emprendió su gran ambición de dibujar El Buscón de Quevedo, tarea que interrumpió en 1881 por un ataque de hemiplejia que le dejó sin habla y paralizó la parte derecha de su cuerpo. Poco a poco aprendió a dibujar con la zurda, con la que concluyó los 120 dibujos que completan esta obra, que sería publicada en Londres en 1892. Esta edición ofrece íntegra la versión completa, tal y como la concibió Urrabieta Vierge.
