Adoption of biodiesel eventually would help decrease a nation's dependence on oil, and substituted with use of locally available sources, such as coal, gas, or renewable sources. While the total energy balance is debated, it is clear that the dependence on oil is reduced. One example is the energy used to manufacture fertilizers, which could come from a variety of sources other than petroleum. Cultivation of plants like Jatropha curcas in wastelands needs to be propagated further which would generate earnings for the cultivators. In fact, it is available naturally on marshlands. If even a B-5 blend of biodiesel becomes feasible economically, it would mean saving millions, and for a developing country like India, it is precisely the reason why studies on biodiesel are of utmost importance. It is universally accepted now that biodiesel is a renewable and biodegradable alternative fuel suitable for CI engines. It reduces the CO, HC and particulate emissions but marginally increases the NOx emissions which can be lowered by retarding fuel injection timing and/or by using suitable additives. 72 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -There is an increasing interest in alternative energy sources as the fossil fuel reserves like petroleum, charcoal and natural gas are limited and utilization of these fuels creates environmental pollution. The microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a new form of renewable energy technology that can generate electricity from what would otherwise be considered waste. In an MFC, bacteria are separated from a terminal electron acceptor at the cathode so that the only means for respiration is to transfer electrons to the anode thus converting chemical energy to electrical energy by the catalytic reaction of microorganisms. There has been a growing interest worldwide on MFC as it utilizes biowaste for power generation and reduces environmental pollution. In the present investigation, an attempt was made to generate electricity from MFC by utilizing different biowastes such as fresh cow dung, kitchen drain water and wastewater. A mathematical model based on the data collected has been developed to express voltage generated with respect to time. It has been found that for any biowaste whatsoever, voltage generated in an MFC is a linear function of time with a negative slope. 68 pp. Englisch.

To check for its efficiency, we must study the manner in which it helps to remove heat from a system concerned. The higher the heat removal rate, the more efficiently it can recover heat that would otherwise get wasted. In our work, it was chosen to establish mathematical models of fall of temperature with respect to time in the condenser section of pulsating heat pipes due to natural cooling from a certain higher temperature to the room temperature for various diameters of pipes made of copper and for various lengths of the evaporator section using water as the working fluid. We have found that temperature decreases exponentially in time both for single loop and for multiple loops. For a fixed length of the evaporator section, we have seen that temperature falls faster for smaller diameter of the pipe. The rate of change of temperature has been seen to rise with increase in the number of turns in the evaporator section. We have found further that the instantaneous failure rate of falling temperature rises exponentially with increase in the number of turns in the evaporator section. 184 pp. Englisch.
