"Accompanying the Zimmerli Museum of Art's 2019 exhibition, Dialogues-Ilya Kabakov and Viktor Pivovarov: Stories About Ourselves explores the album, an innovative genre of artistic expression popularized in the 1970s by the Moscow conceptualist circle. Somewhere between a drawing and a novel, a sculpture and a performance, in a dozen or more loose pages of text and image, an album gives visual form to a narrative intended to be displayed and read aloud. In the Soviet Union, Kabakov and Pivovarov shared their albums in the semiprivate spaces of their homes and studios with groups of artists, writers, and intellectuals seeking creativity outside state-sanctioned socialist realism. The very foundation of their world-renowned careers, Kabakov's and Pivovarov's self-reflective albums, address-often alle-gorically-the tribulations of their everyday lives in the Soviet Union. Born in 1933 in Dnipropetrovsk [now Dnipro], Ukraine, Ilya Kabakov graduated with a degree in graphic design and book illustration from Moscow's Surikov Art Institute. He was employed as an illustrator for the State Children's Publishing House (Detgiz). In the privacy of his studio, until his emigration in 1987, he produced abstract and conceptual art. Today, Kabakov lives and works in Long Island, New York, where he collaborates with his wife, Emilia. Viktor Pivovarov was born in 1937 in Moscow. After graduating from the Moscow Polygraphic Institute in 1962, he worked as an artist in both official and unofficial capacities, earning a living as a children's book illustrator while independently exploring the metaphys-ical in painting and the graphic arts. He immigrated in 1982 to Czechoslovakia, and he continues to live and work in Prague"--.

Viktor Pivovarov's The Agent in Love is the English edition of a book by the classic of Moscow Conceptualism translated by one of the most famous contemporary Russian to English translators Andrew Bromfield. The publication launches a new series within Garage's publishing program, Artists Write, that will be dedicated to the release of previously unpublished prose by Russian artists in foreign languages. The eminent Slavic scholar and editor Andrew Bromfield has made the works of such Russian authors as Alexander Pushkin, Mikhail Bulgakov, Leo Tolstoy, the Strugatsky brothers, Daniil Kharms, Genrikh Sapgir, Viktor Pelevin, Boris Akunin, and Vladimir Voinovich accessible to an international audience. The Agent in Love is a book of memoirs and reflections by Viktor Pivovarov initially published by New Literary Observer in 2001. The second edition, revised and expanded, was prepared by Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in 2016, coinciding with the artist's retrospective The Snail's Trail. The Agent in Love combines the author's personal and artistic biographies with his comments and contemplations about various aspects of life, art, faith, the problem of choice, and love. The book received a warm reaction from the audience, both in 2001 and 2016. In 2018, it was translated into Czech and published in Prague. 9788090671430.

The written word has been an important part of Russian art since the early years of the twentieth century, when artists of the avant-garde began writing manifestos and developing futurist concepts such as zaum (transrational) poetry through their art. The unofficial artists of the 1960s and 1970s continued this tradition, committing concepts and reminiscences to paper and incorporating language in their work.
