Ein tadelloses Exemplar. - Aus dem Vorwort: Am Anfang meiner Arbeit stand das Interesse an der semantischen Beschreibung normal-sprachlicher Lexeme - und die Unzufriedenheit mit dem, was ich an Semantik kannte: lexikographische Fleißarbeiten, die emprisches Material zwar in großem Umfang, aber unsystematisch zusammentragen; den 'markerism' und seine generativ-semantischen Abarten, die empirisch und theoretisch in der Luft hängen; schließlich die logische Semantik, die zwar komplexe Skopus- und Quantifi-kationsprobleme formal einwandfrei in den Griff bekommt, sich aber bei der Bedeutungsbeschreibung ganz normaler Lexeme für unzuständig erklärt. Die Lektüre von M.J. CRESSWELLS Logics and Languages' hat mich überzeugt, daß eine logisch fundierte Bedeutungsanalyse flexibel und effizient sein kann; flexibler und effizienter jedenfalls als der spröde und unhandliche Eindruck vermuten läßt, den etwa MONTAGUES Arbeiten auf Nichteingeweihte machen. Etwa zur gleichen Zeit ist mir mehr zufällig ein Paper von Chuck RIEGER in die Hände geraten, in dem ein eindrucksvolles System zur maschinellen Rezeption natürlich-sprachlicher Äußerungen beschrieben wird. Beides ist in meine Arbeit eingegangen, die logische Semantik als theoretischer Hintergrund und die computerlinguistische Bedeutungsanalyse als Perspektive für die praktische Anwendung. Dazu kommt als Drittes meine linguistischphilologische Ausbildung, die mich - hoffentlich - daran gehindert hat, den Blick für die Vielschichtigkeit sprachlicher Fakten und die Wichtigkeit des Details zu verlieren. It argues for a view of indefiniteness as the potential for further contextual specification, and proposes a unified logical treatment of indefiniteness on this basis. The inherent inconsistency of natural language induced by irreducible imprecision is investigated, and treated in terms of a dynamic extension of the proposed logic.
