In Chapter Three (What is the evidence) evidence-based medicine is discussed, how different medical publications are classified, the processes involved in publishing medical papers and how they are structured. This is relevant and important in understanding the selection process in play that a piece of academic work is subjected to before it reaches its readers, how it varies and how it may correlate with the quality of the end product. Chapter Four (Mining the truth) is about conducting searches. It identifies appropriate search engines and gives tips on how to stay on course. Chapter Five (Appraising the evidence) outlines how to judge the quality of published papers based on checklists.
