Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. About the BookBeaters is a powerful coming-of-age novel that traces the inner life of Lex, a sensitive boy growing up in colonial Suriname, where innocence collides with the confusions of adulthood. Through a series of vivid glimpses, the story captures a childhood rich in spontaneity, imagination, and a near-mystical bond with nature gradually disrupted by the contradictions, prejudices, and moral rigidity of the adult world. As Lex confronts colorism, colonial legacies, cultural divisions, and family tensions including a complex relationship with his Jewish-Creole mother he grows rebellious and increasingly alienated, feeling like a stranger in his own land and even within himself. Yet Beaters is not merely a story of disillusionment. It is also a narrative of empathy and forgiveness, revealing how fear, powerlessness, and unmet needs for love shape human behavior.Ultimately, Lex chooses to leave his homeland in order to grow, later returning with a deeper sense of awareness and belonging. Written in evocative, lyrical prose, Beaters is both universal in its exploration of identity and unmistakably Surinamese and Caribbean in spirit.About the AuthorPaul Marlee was born in Paramaribo, Suriname, and came of age amid the cultural complexities of a former Dutch colony. Educated in Suriname, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, and the United States, he holds degrees in agriculture, education, and comparative literature, including advanced graduate work at New York University.A former soldier, teacher, and university lecturer, Marlee has lived and worked across three continents Suriname, the Netherlands, and the United States countries he refers to as his "three fatherlands." His life as a globetrotter, educator, and cultural observer deeply informs his writing, which explores themes of identity, displacement, colonial legacy, and belonging. While ultimately resettling in the United States, Suriname remains the spiritual and emotional center of his work. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. ABOUT THE VOOKThis Book is about a rebellious young man who has the archetypal desire to break out of the straitjacket. He criticizes mindless capitalism, which threatens to destroy nature, and the planet itself. He tries to find a balance between his being white, Jewish and partially sub Saharan African. He also attempts to balance his tendencies towards his physical appetite and his spiritual longing All this causes him to see himself as a guineapig test case of inscrutable Cosmic forces. He doesn't have peace with the pervasive corruption of his homeland Suriname. His joining this evil is meant symbolically, not literally. Of course the necessary humor is part of the portrayal of the main character also falling for the temptations. He wants to symbolize the way many go in the poor countries after gaining a university education abroad. This book is a revised edition. The old version of Guineapig is already on Amazon.comABOUT THE AUTHORPaul Marlee was born on June 20, 1938, in Paramaribo, Suriname, a colony of Holand. After completing school in 1956, he emigrated to the Holland USA in 1958 but quickly became disillusioned by life in the "Big Apple." He enlisted in the Army in 1958 and was stationed in Germany, but after his discharge in 1962, he studied Tropical Agriculture in Holland, earning a degree in 1965. Motivated by patriotism, Marlee returned to Suriname, working in agriculture and earning a av BA in English in 1972. He later pursued an M.Ed. in Pluerto Rico and on MA, and MPhil in Comparative Literature in New York.
