He denies that his daughter was a working girl. After an interview with a guidance counselor at San Jose State College, Tracy gets an identity on the copy cat. A man wanted his ex girlfriend dead, and killed a call girl simply to make up a matching homicide. Tracy and Phillips figure out some key evidence left behind the latest body dump, and are able to mentally jump ahead of the slasher. Lying in wait for the slasher to show, they renew their relationship. After a car chase on Highway One, which ends in Greg's car being up-side down in a sand dune, Tracy is assigned a seat in the front of a CHP car and instructed to stay there. In the foggy night, the slasher manages evade the manhunt and smash out the window of Tracy's police car. He forces Tracy to the driver's seat. He shoves a CHP helmet over her head and tells her to "drive". They are able to leave the premises without being stopped in the fog. He makes her drive somewhat aimlessly in the west area of San Francisco, then orders her stop in Golden Gate park. She knows what is coming next. Tracy manages to survive the attack, and later, in the front seat of the CHP car, he's beginning to get ready for another attack. She's had it. She stomps on the gas, driving like a wild woman to the Golden Gate. She plans to "take his half of the car off at a zillion miles an hour." Tracy enters the program a couple of days later, going undercover by being committed to the detox ward by her pseudo husband, a local PI. She has gotten herself intentionally drunk for the occasion. While in Detox, she discovers a fourteen year old girl, who is completely messed up with drugs. The girl can't seem to get rid of the stupor she came into Detox with. One minute she's getting better, the next she has "fallen" back into her hole. Once Tracy has emerged from Detox, she agrees to take part in the program, figuring she would only be there long enough to find the blackmailer. She is also getting suspicious about the girl's condition, and something happens that confirms that the girl isn't getting the same detoxing that Tracy had. Knowing the missing woman is connected with the firm, Tracy begins a stake-out from within. She applies for and gets a job on the front desk. The first day, she is asked to take a package to Lodi, fifteen miles away. She decides not to open the transmittal envelope, as she is sure the package is marked and sealed. She returns to Stockton, more and more aware of the situation she's finding herself in. She's sure there are drugs involved, a network of distributor-dealers. Wisely, she decides that a single, small, female P.I. verses a established drug smuggling ring isn't fair odds, so she abruptly quits the law offices, and lays back to watch the front doors. After work hours are over, Tracy follows a woman she has named Beautiful Bod. They go to the Marina in the Northwest part of town, where she and an apparent boyfriend leave in a small runabout. The next day, she sees her target walking towards the front door. Tracy pulls alongside and stops her. The girl agrees to go with Tracy to a coffee shop and call off her DEA father. Tracy will be out of her life soon as that is done. Instead, the girl uses the old bathroom gambit, and climbs out the window. Tracy is in her car, waiting for her to emerge from the alley. She does, and gets into an old van. The van heads straight our of town, with Tracy following as far back as she can. When in the foothills, she momentarily looses sight of the van. It reappears immediately, and then, inexplicably flies off the road and into a valley, turning over in a somersault, with three explosions occurring when the vehicle impacts. Tracy arrives at the scene, and small fires are already forming all over the hillside. The van is in a thousand chunks, and is totally unidentifiable as a vehicle. Figuring the case has come to a dead end, Tracy heads back to Sausalito, where she is sharing a house with Brad Springer, M.E. After a night of love-making, Brad nervously tells Tracy that he has found another love. Tracy is crushed of course. But considering her past, she wasn't completely naive about this possibility occurring. She takes a Delta sabbatical to get over the incredible hurt. While moored in a tiny lagoon hidden along False River, she shouts invectives to the summer winds. She breaks down in tears. She swims. She drinks. After a few days, she comes out of it. Tracy is surreptitiously visited in the dead of night by two armed men in an outboard powered boat. The men leave and an hour later, the black stealth go-fast boat she has been tracking comes roaring through False River, but never stops. The outboard skiff re-appears, and the men find a bleach bottle. Following a line attached to it, they eventually man-handle a large, heavy cylinder aboard, and leave quickly. Tracy has been watching the activities from the tules and reeds on the shoreline of the river. She formulates a plan.
