He was a friend to cultural icons such as Samuel Johnson and Henry Fielding, and was widely known throughout London.Smart, a high church Anglican, was infamous for his pseudonymous midwife 'Mrs. Mary Midnight' and for widespread accounts of his years confined in a mental asylum by his father-in-law, due to Smart's supposed religious mania.Although his poetry is primarily religious, it includes themes such as theories on nature and his promotion of English nationalism.
