Moreover, historians and scholars working in the field of manuscripts and early documents have continued to add to our pool of knowledge. The new edition documents the early times of our universities by means of accurate transcriptions and critical discussions of the "Charters of Foundation and Early Documents" of the Group's thirty-seven universities. It is the result of the valuable work of specialists co-ordinated by the editors, Marc Nelissen and Jos MM Hermans. The Coimbra Group can be seen as a sample selection of traditional universities in Europe that want to continue the old traditional idea of 'Universitas'. Arenberg in de Lage Landen geeft een overzicht van de bezittingen van een hoogadellijk huis in Vlaanderen en Nederland. Adel spreekt tot de verbeelding. Zeker hoge adel, op het niveau van vorstenhuizen…, van regerende en vooral niet langer regerende geslachten. Arenberg is zo'n huis. Arenberg is in Duitsland geworteld, maar behoorlijk Europees verzwagerd. Tot vandaag behoren ze tot het handvol geslachten dat in Belgie aanspraak kan maken op de prinsentitel. Het gros van hun maatschappelijk leven speelde zich trouwens altijd af in de Nederlanden, waar ze zich tot de trouwste dienaren van Habsburg ontpopten. Alhoewel, er zaten ook altijd schuinmarcheerders tussen, zoals Lumey (naar het dorpje Lummen in Belgisch Limburg), de aanvoerder van de watergeuzen en niet enkel de schrik der zee, maar ook de vervolger van de Gorcumse martelaren. Maar door de band waren de Arenbergs loyale dienaren van het staatsgezag. Karel van Arenberg sneuvelde in de slag bij Heiligerlee (1572) aan het begin van de Tachtigjarige Oorlog en de volgende eeuwen leverden zijn nazaten slag over heel Europa en schopten ze het generatie na generatie tot veldmaarschalk in het Oostenrijkse leger. Terug van de oorlog legden ze zich toe op het beheer van hun landgoederen, de basis van hun fortuin, die over de hele Nederlanden verspreid lagen, van het Ardenner Woud tot Terschelling in de Waddenzee, van Zevenkerken aan de Moerdijk tot Koekelare in West-Vlaanderen, van de polders van Beveren tot de heide van Retie, Vorst en Lichtaart in de Kempen. Arenberg drukt zijn stempel op het land: door ontginning van woeste grond en rationele uitbating van het landbouwareaal, door tewerkstelling en landschappelijke ontwikkeling. Edingen met zijn vermaarde park en Heverlee in het hertogdom Aarschot vormden hun voornaamste verblijfplaatsen op het land en het somptueuze Egmontpaleis te Brussel was hun optrekje in de stad. Qua grondbezit en levensstandaard waren de Arenberg de enige edellieden in den lande die de vergelijking met een Engelse lord of een Pruisische jonker konden doorstaan. Voor de Franse Revolutie waren aan grondbezit allerlei heerlijke rechten verbonden op het vlak van rechtspraak en bestuur. De impact op het lokale niveau en op de leefomstandigheden van dorpers en buitenlui kan nauwelijks worden overschat. Het was de tijd dat boeren nog eerbiedig de muts afnamen als de karos met het hertogelijk blazoen voorbijdokkerde. Tegenover het respect stond loyauteit en bescherming. Het systeem riep natuurlijk ook de nodige weerstand op en maatschappelijke omwentelingen, zodat er van de vroegere macht nog maar een schaduw overblijft. Een kasteel, een kerk, een school of een fanfare, roerend en onroerend erfgoed, relicten her en der over de voormalige bezittingen verspreid als bewijs dat macht ook goedgunstig kan zijn. Voorts is er een Arenbergschouwburg in Antwerpen, en een dito bioscoop in Brussel en een heuse universitaire campus in Heverlee die de herinnering aan de familie levendig houden. Het Meerdaalwoud bezuiden Leuven, het grootste bosgebied in het anders zo bosarme Vlaanderen, vormt misschien wel de fraaiste nalatenschap van het geslacht, een restruimte uit de feodaliteit en een natuurlijke reserve voor de toekomst. 777 g.
