Sotto le abitazioni della moderna città di Tan Afella sono state identificate le tracce di un antico villaggio rurale e una grande necropoli, del periodo Garamantiano, si espande ai margini del moderno insediamento. Questo periodo è stato testimone della progressiva sedentarizzazione di gruppi umani nelle oasi e dello sviluppo delle strade carovaniere legate al fiorire di un mercato intra - e trans-sahariano. Questi processi, influenzati anche dalle significative mutazioni del clima che portarono allo sfruttamento agricolo delle poche aree nelle quali erano disponibili le risorse idriche - le oasi - erano archeologicamente sconosciuti per quanto riguardava gli insediamenti.
