Er studierte Medizin und Anatomie und promovierte im Jahre 1890 an der Universität München zum Dr. med. Danach war er zwei Jahre Prosektor am Anatomischen Institut München und habilitierte sich im Jahre 1892 als Privatdozent für Anatomie an der Universität München. Seit 1902 hatte er an dieser als ordentlicher Professor den Lehrstuhl für Anatomie und Histologie inne, auf dem er dreissig Jahre, bis zu seiner Emeritierung im Jahre 1932, lehrte. Generationen deutscher Anatomen haben ihm in dieser Zeit ihre medizinische Grundausbildung zu verdanken gehabt. Aber auch Generationen von Künstlern vermittelte er in seinen Vorlesungen an der Münchener Akademie der bildenden Künste ein für ihr malerisches und bildhauerisches Schaffen bedeutsames Wissen um den menschlichen Körper. Nach dem Tode Sauerbruchs ist M. der letzte lebende Vertreter jenes Münchener medizinischen Lehrkörpers der zwanziger Jahre, der mit den Namen v. Müller, Romberg, Bumke, Zumbusch u.a. München so weitgehende Anziehungskraft verlieh. Seinen Lebensabend verlebte M. auf seinem Landsitz in Schalchen am Chiemsee.
