A star-studded but typical Hollywood biopic based on an original story by John O'Hara ("Ten North Frederick," 1955), about a successful 1920s musical writing team, DeSylva, Brown and Henderson. They score several hits on Broadway, but tensions between the three writers mount as two begin to feel neglected. 8 x 10 inches. The fourth film in Rank's popular "Doctor" series, and the first not to feature actor Dirk Bogarde as Dr. Simon Sparrow (although Bogarde would return for the next film in the series, "Doctor in Distress" in 1963). The series follows the frequently romantic, comic antics of a group of young doctors. Set and shot on location in London. Green titled wrappers, noted as Semi-final Script on the front wrapper, dated 14-12-59. Title page present, dated December 1959, with credits for screenwriter Nicholas Phipps and novelist Richard Gordon. 128 leaves, with last page of text numbered 127. File copy, rubber-stamped on the front wrapper. Based on Weidman's 1937 novel, and Vera Caspary's loose adaptation. Harriet Boyd (Hayward) is a fashion designer who partners with Teddy (Dailey), whom she loves, and Sam (Jaffe), and starts a new business dedicated to selling affordable women's dresses. A rival fashion company lead by Noble (Sanders) momentarily distracts Harriet, but at the last minute she realizes her true devotion to Teddy and Sam. Screenwriter Polonsky was blacklisted shortly after the film's release, refusing to answer questions before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Vladimir Pozner (1905 - 1992), who would adapt Hellman's play for the future film, was a French author of Russian-Jewish descent. His "Les etats desunis. Reportage" (The Disunited States. A Reportage), in essence - a leftist travelogue and one of his most famous works, would document racism, inequality, everyday life and its characters, the gangsters, the starlets, and the poor workers in the United States in the early 20th century.
