Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Is medieval logic formal? And if yes, in what sense? There are striking affinities between medieval and contemporary theories of language. Authors from the two periods share formal ambitions and maintain complex, and at time uneasy, relations with natural language. However, modern scholars b…ecame careful not to overlook the specificities of theories developed more than five hundred years apart, in particular with respect to their 'formal' character. In 1972, Alfonso Maieru noted that the efforts of medieval logicians to identify logical structures in language formal enough to become objects of scientific consideration. He also stressed that the language investigated is a historical one, Latin, so that one can legitimately wonder to which extent . one is allowed to speak of 'formal logic' in the middle ages. In other words, medieval logic is characterized by a tension between 'formalist ambitions' and constraints proper to natural language. Today, our knowledge of the field has considerably expanded, calling for a new assessment of the question. This book considers the issue of the formal character of medieval logic and aims at clarifying in what sense the language it is operating on (and in) is natural or not. The standard story is that after Aristotle got off to a tentative start, the study of fallacies laid dormant until people at Port Royal and John Locke revived it in spectacular fashion. Die Debatten um diese Standpunkte haben das Interesse der philosophischen Gemeinschaft an metaphilosophischen und methodologischen Fragen neu geweckt. Der Band 2017 der Studia philosophica stellt ausgewählte Beiträge des Symposiums der Schweizerischen Philosophischen Gesellschaft (Universität Genf, 2016) vor, das der Rolle der Geschichte der Philosophie in den aktuellen Debatten gewidmet war.In fünf Themenkomplexen werden Reflexionen vorgestellt, die zwar nie infrage stellen, dass Geschichte für die Philosophie nötig ist. Sie zeigen aber divergierende Positionen auf, was die Frage des Nutzens der Philosophiegeschichte, des Verhältnisses zwischen ihr und der Philosophie sowie die vorgestellten philosophiehistorischen Praktiken betrifft. Anton Marty (1847-1914) und Karl Bühler (1879-1963) sind zwei Schlüsselfiguren dieser Tradition. Ihre Beiträge im Gebiet der Philosophie der Sprache, der Psychologie und der Linguistik haben einen tiefgreifenden Einfluss auf die Entwicklung dieser Disziplinen ausgeübt. Trotzdem sind beide Denker bis heute meistens im Hintergrund der Forschung geblieben, so dass ihnen im Vergleich zu Brentano, Husserl oder Wittgenstein nur wenig Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt wurde. Im vorliegenden Band werden die Sprachphilosophien dieser beiden Autoren näher untersucht und ihr Verhältnis zueinander und zu späteren Traditionen - wie die der analytischen Philosophie und der kognitiven Pragmatik - wird beleuchtet. Im Zentrum der vorliegenden Studien steht die Frage des Verhältnisses von Denken und Sprache, ein Verhältnis das zugleich den gemeinsamen Nenner und den Scheidepunkt von Martys und Bühlers Denken darstellt. Beide Denker sind sich einig, dass Denken und Sprache aufs Engste verbunden sind. Ihre Meinungen gehen jedoch auseinander, wenn es darum geht, die Rolle des Denkens genauer zu bestimmen. Während Marty die Hauptfunktion der Sprache (die Bedeutung) im Erwecken bestimmter psychischer Phänomene im Anderen sieht, besteht für Bühler das Wesentliche der Sprache in ihrer Darstellungsfunktion, in der objektiven Koordination von Sprachmitteln mit Sachen und Sachverhalten. Bühler entwickelt sein berühmt gewordenes Organonmodell der Sprache ausgehend und in Abgrenzung von Martyss 1908 veröffentlichten Untersuchungen zur Grundlegung der allgemeinen Grammatik und Sprachphilosophie, denen er eine ausführliche Rezension widmet. Während ein Teil der Beiträge des Bandes sich den jeweils spezifischen Thesen Marty's (Chrudzimski, Rollinger) und Bühlers (Friedrich, Samain, Fisette) zur Sprache und zum Denken sowie ihrer Einbettung in den jeweiligen zeitgenössischen Diskussionskontext widmet, hinterfragt ein anderer Teil Bühlers Marty-Kritik und ermöglicht diese sowohl aus historischer Sicht (Fréchette, Majolino, Cesalli) wie auch ausgehend von den aktuellen Diskussionen in der Sprachphilosophie (Liedtke) zu relativieren.
