Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Is medieval logic formal? And if yes, in what sense? There are striking affinities between medieval and contemporary theories of language. Authors from the two periods share formal ambitions and maintain complex, and at time uneasy, relations with natural language. However, modern scholars b…ecame careful not to overlook the specificities of theories developed more than five hundred years apart, in particular with respect to their 'formal' character. In 1972, Alfonso Maieru noted that the efforts of medieval logicians to identify logical structures in language formal enough to become objects of scientific consideration. He also stressed that the language investigated is a historical one, Latin, so that one can legitimately wonder to which extent . one is allowed to speak of 'formal logic' in the middle ages. In other words, medieval logic is characterized by a tension between 'formalist ambitions' and constraints proper to natural language. Today, our knowledge of the field has considerably expanded, calling for a new assessment of the question. This book considers the issue of the formal character of medieval logic and aims at clarifying in what sense the language it is operating on (and in) is natural or not. Without notable exception, the ever-growing literat…ure on argumentative failures suffer from a conspicuous lack of interest in Mediaeval fallacy theory - arguably the most creative stage in the whole history of argumentation theories. The standard story is that after Aristotle got off to a tentative start, the study of fallacies laid dormant until people at Port Royal and John Locke revived it in spectacular fashion. "Fallacies in the Arabic, Byzantine, Hebrew and Latin Traditions" will show that this narrative is misleading, if not altogether false. Free of boundaries or limitations imposed by differences in discipline, language and culture, the volume will provide ample and unambiguous record of the exegetical proficiency, technical expertise and argumentative savoir-faire typically displayed by mediaeval logicians jurists and theologians on issues whose complexity we underestimate to some extent - such as the problem of defining what a fallacy is or the pitfalls of linguistic expression. Working its way from the inside out within each mediaeval tradition and comparing mediaeval findings and lessons to contemporary views and trends, the volume will show where the potential for novelty and the rightful place of mediaeval theories of fallacies lies within contemporary argumentation studies. Dem gegenüber steht eine eher «kontinuistische» Position (Claude Panaccio, Pascal Engel), die sich auf prominente Figuren der analytischen Philosophie stützt, etwa auf Peter Strawson, Donald Davidson oder Michael Dummett. Die Debatten um diese Standpunkte haben das Interesse der philosophischen Gemeinschaft an metaphilosophischen und methodologischen Fragen neu geweckt. Der Band 2017 der Studia philosophica stellt ausgewählte Beiträge des Symposiums der Schweizerischen Philosophischen Gesellschaft (Universität Genf, 2016) vor, das der Rolle der Geschichte der Philosophie in den aktuellen Debatten gewidmet war.In fünf Themenkomplexen werden Reflexionen vorgestellt, die zwar nie infrage stellen, dass Geschichte für die Philosophie nötig ist. Sie zeigen aber divergierende Positionen auf, was die Frage des Nutzens der Philosophiegeschichte, des Verhältnisses zwischen ihr und der Philosophie sowie die vorgestellten philosophiehistorischen Praktiken betrifft. Im Hintergrund steht die Frage, ob es entdeckte und zu entdeckende philosophische Wahrheiten überhaupt gibt und die Philosophie in diesem Sinne eine Fortschrittsgeschichte kennt oder ob man sich mit der kulturellen und historischen Vielfalt der philosophischen Doktrinen zufriedengeben muss, deren Geschichten inkommensurabel bleiben. Was es heisst, dass die Sprache - Instrument und Gegenstand des Philosophierens - in ihrer Geschichtlichkeit unhintergehbar ist, wird dabei ebenso untersucht wie die Frage der historischen Kontingenz in den philosophischen Problemstellungen.
