Die über ein Vierteljahrhundert währende wechselvolle Geschichte dieses vom Kurfürsten Karl Theodor bestellten Globus wird genauso berücksichtigt wie die historischen Aspekte eines geänderten Weltbildes im 18. Jahrhundert. Das Buch ist für Historiker ebenso interessant wie für Restauratoren und ermutigt außerdem,neue Wege in der Konservierung zu beschreiten, die mit modernen Techniken einhergehen. Hierbei werden die mathematischen Verfahren der Bildverarbeitung besonders herausgestellt, die zum Filtern der digitalisierten Karten eingesetzt wurden. Die Ergebnisse dieser Filterverfahren dienten einerseits zur Herstellung von Faksimiles, die auf der originalen Kugel Verwendung fanden und sämtlich im Buch abgebildet sind. Andererseits ist auf Basis dieser Daten ein virtueller Glbous entstanden.Die zahlreichen Farbabbildungen und Skizzen illustrieren die Einzelbeiträge und Erleichtern das Verständnis des Restaurationsprozesses.
