Añadir al carritoEx-university library copy. Presumed British first edition (per 1890 date upon title page only). [4], vii-xxviii, 1-435 pages. Hardcover: H 22.75cm x L 15cm. No dust jacket. Dark green cloth mottled; spine mildly darkened with library shelf designation in white ink above heel; spine's gilt stamping still reasonably bright but not vibrant; slight scuffing at spine ends and board corners. Toning to text block edges with interior leaves somewhat affected at margins; some leaves remain uncut at their top edges or fore-edges. Library bookplate on front pastedown; past owner's ink signature at front flyleaf's top right; library stamps and markings on title leaf verso, page vii, and on page 51; no other library markings readily apparent upon a quick perusal. Residue and staining from a now mostly removed melted rubber band mars pages 204-205 with some tearing and small chips affecting 203 and 206 as well but text loss is small and missing lettering can be easily extrapolated. Binding is firm.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Produced in 1919, Passionate Journey uses Masereel's simple and precise woodcuts to present a story of one man's life and loves in post-World War I Berlin. Woodcutter, painter, cosmopolitan and anti-militarist, Belgium-born Masereel (1889-1972) was an extremely popular artist in 1920s Germany. A contemporary of Kathe Kollwitz and George Grosz, his "novels-without-words"--completely composed of woodcuts--have been neglected in the States. Here, 165 striking woodcuts generate the visual narrative of a young man's initiation into the urban milieu. The raw power and diversity of the city's day to day events continually expand his understanding of life's possibilities. The hero's fascination with the city's abundance of art and culture, political debate and industrial glory combine with observations on an equal profusion of poignant social trauma. The protagonist travels to distant lands; this journey of vibrant percipience propels him toward an enlarged comprehension of his role in a world of good and evil, love and tenderness and clashing social interests. Mann's effusive introduction discusses Masereel's life and influences and details the ideas that motivated and enliven this vivid work. Good condition. Minor bumping wear on cover edges.
