Añadir al carritoHardback. Condición: New. This book, the sixth in the series ``Collected Papers of John Milnor'', contains all of Milnor's work on Real and Complex Dynamics from 1953 to 1999, plus one paper from 2000. These papers provide important and fundamental material in real and complex dynamical systems. Many of them have become classics in the field. Several questions addressed in them continue to be important in current research. Having them together in the same volume gives readers a taste of all the great mathematics developed by the author in the different areas of dynamics. In some cases, there have been minor corrections or clarifications, as well as references to more recent work which answers questions raised by the author. John Milnor's papers are accompanied by introductions that put them in perspective with respect to the current state of the field. There is also an index to facilitate searching the book for specific topics.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. A genuine 1965 first edition of John Milnor's Topology from the Differentiable Viewpoint, published by the University Press of Virginia and based directly on Milnor's celebrated 1963 lectures in Charlottesville. This is the original hardback issue, preceding all later reprints, and is now one of the most sought?after early Milnor titles. Milnor's treatment of smooth manifolds, Sard's theorem, degree theory, vector fields, and the Hopf theorem has become a classic introduction to differential topology. The 1965 edition is the format closest to the original lectures, with the preface dated Princeton, March 1965, and is far scarcer than the later paperback versions commonly seen. This copy is clean, tight, and well?preserved, with the distinctive grey?and?black binding and gold circular motif on the upper board. The interior is crisp, with no library markings, and the binding remains strong. First editions of this work in collectible condition appear only rarely, and this is an excellent example of a foundational text in modern topology. A scarce and desirable Milnor first edition, ideal for collectors of differential topology, 20th?century mathematics, and landmark works in geometry.

Añadir al carritoFirst edition of this work by the famed mathematician. Octavo, original wrappers. Signed by John Milnor on the title page. In very good condition, name to the half-title page and pastedown. The theory of characteristic classes provides a meeting ground for the various disciplines of differential topology, differential and algebraic geometry, cohomology, and fiber bundle theory. As such, it is a fundamental and an essential tool in the study of differentiable manifolds. In this volume, the authors provide a thorough introduction to characteristic classes, with detailed studies of Stiefel-Whitney classes, Chern classes, Pontrjagin classes, and the Euler class. Three appendices cover the basics of cohomology theory and the differential forms approach to characteristic classes, and provide an account of Bernoulli numbers. Based on lecture notes of John Milnor, which first appeared at Princeton University in 1957 and have been widely studied by graduate students of topology ever since.

Volume II is signed by contributors Kenneth J. Arrow and John Milnor. Volume III is signed by contributors W.H. Fleming and Philip Wolfe on the title page. Brown & John Von Neumann, âSolutions of Games by Differential Equationsâ (pp. 73-79); John Nash & Lloyd Shapleyâs important paper: âA Simple Three-person Poker Gameâ (105-16), and other papers by Hermann, Weyle, Gale, Dresher, Kuhn, McKinsey, et al. Volume II contains: Lloyd Shapleyâs âA Value for n-Person Gamesâ (pp. 307-17): A âremarkable 1953 paper⦠There he proposed that it might be possible to evaluate, in a numerical way, the âvalueâ of playing a game. The particular function he derived for this purpose, which has come to be called the Shapley value, has been the focus of sustained interest among students of cooperative game theory ever sinceâ (Alvin Roth, who shared the 2012 Nobel Prize with Shapley, Chapter 1: âIntroduction to the Shapley Value,â in Roth, The Shapley Value: Essays in Honor of Lloyd S. Shapley, Cambridge University Press, 1988). Also contains Von Neumannâs âA Certain Zero-Sum Two-Person Game Equivalent to the Optimal Assignment Problemâ (pp. 5-12) and D.B. Gillies, J.P. The latter is the supplement to Von Neumann and Morgensternâs Theory of Games and Economic Behavior promised in the footnote on p. 196 of the second edition. Volume III contributors include Gale, Karlin, Kemeny, Oxtoby, Scarf, Shapley, et al. Volume IV contributors include Nobel Laureates Harsanyi, Aumann, and Shapley, as well as Kalisch, Von Neumann (âOn the Theory of Games of Strategy,â pp. 13-42), Shubik, et al.
