One of the earliest settlers of Kentucky and a pioneer of Fort Harrod, Jared Cowan had served as a private in Captain James Harrod's Company of Kentucky Pioneers in 1774, along with his bro…ther John. Jared Cowan is sometimes confused in the historical record with his brother James, who was killed by Indians in 1774. Jared, however, lived in Mercer County until his death in 1795, with his will attested and inventoried in 1796. Signer James Mahan received 200 acres from James Harrod in 1787 after serving as Harrod's farm manager but is also strongly suspected of having had an affair with Harrod's wife, Ann, and of being the actual father of Harrod's daughter, Margaret. Old folds to the documents with only light wear. An extraordinary document signed by two of the 32 founders of Kentucky's oldest settlement.
