Originalhardcover. Condición: Wie neu. 274 S. Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - The three-part work provides a first synthetic account of the history of the Polish intelligentsia from the days of its formation to World War I. Part one (17501831) traces the formation of the intelligentsia as a social class in the epoch of Enlightenment. It stresses the importance of the birth of bureaucratic institutions that created the demand for the educated stratum. It analyses the results of the collapse of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1795 the ominous event that transformed the political geography of East Central Europe. The work combines social and intellectual history, tracing both the formation of the intelligentsia as a social stratum and the forms of engagement of the intelligentsia in the public discourse. Thus, it offers a broad view of the groups transformations which immensely influenced the course of the Polish history. ISBN 9783631623756 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 472.…

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 2021 Brill hardcover edition. Light reading wear else very good condition. From the cover: A sense of loss is a driving force in most nationalist movements: territorial loss, the loss of traditions, language, national virtues or of a Golden Age. But which emotions charged the construction of loss and how did they change over time? To what objects and bodies did emotions stick? How was the production of loss gendered? Which figures of loss predated nationalist ideology and enabled loss within nationalist discourse? 13 scholars from different backgrounds answer these questions by exploring nationalist discourses during the long nineteenth century in the Baltic Sea region through political writings, lectures, novels, letters, paintings, and diaries. Contents Introduction: The Production of Loss by Anna Bohlin, Heidi Gronstrand and Tiina Kinnunen PART 1 The Production of Loss Organising Thought 1 Loss, Emotion, and Transformation of a National Idea: Poland 1795-1815 by Maciej Janowski 2 Visions of the Nation and Feelings of Loss in the Works of Steen Steensen Blicher by Jens Eike Schnall 3 Neglect, Grief, Revenge: Finland in Swedish Nineteenth-Century Literature by Anna Bohlin 4 How a Culture Was Almost Lost: The Sami in Nineteenth-Century Conceptualisations of Finnish Nationhood by Jens Grandell PART 2 Landscapes and Bodies Activating the Production of Loss 5 Entrenchments and Escape Routes: Expressing a Sense of Loss in Danish Art 1848-1864 by Peter Norgaard Larsen 6 Outreach, Invasion, Displacement: Denmark's Disputed Southern Borderland as Negotiated through Strategic and Affective Aspects of Space in Novels by Andersen and Bang by Bjarne Thorup Thomsen 7 Affective Bodies on the Move: Space, Emotions and Loss in Fredrika Runeberg's Historical Novel Lady Catharina Boije and her Daughters by Kristina Malmio 8 Carl Larsson's Spadarvet, My Little Farmstead: Paradise Regained or Lament for a Disappearing Agrarian Society? by Martin Olin 9 Sweden and Algeria in the Travel Writing of Anna Maria Roos, 1905-1909 by Jenny Bergenmar PART 3 Personal Loss and Lived Nationalism 10 'Thus Shall Our Joy Be Solemn, and Our Pain Fruitful': Nation, Loss and the Power of Emotions in Amalie von Helvig's Writings by Jules Kielmann 11 The Sense of Loss in the Context of Language Disputes in Finland: Reflections on E.F. Hardback. Condición: New. A History of Modern Political Thought in East Central Europe is a synthetic work, authored by an international team of researchers, covering twenty national cultures and 250 years. It goes beyond the conventional nation-centered narratives and presents a novel vision especially sensitive to the cross-cultural entanglement of political ideas and discourses. Its principal aim is to make these cultures available for the global 'market of ideas' and revisit some of the basic assumptions about the history of modern political thought, and modernity as such. The present volume is a sequel to Volume I: Negotiating Modernity in the 'Long Nineteenth Century'. It begins with the end of the Great War, depicting the colorful intellectual landscape of the interwar period and the increasing political and ideological radicalization culminating in the Second World War. Taking the war experience both as a breaking point but in many ways also a transmitter of previous intellectual traditions, it maps the intellectual paradigms and debates of the immediate postwar years, marked by a negotiation between the democratic and communist agendas, as well as the subsequent processes of political and cultural Stalinization. Subsequently, the post-Stalinist period is analyzed with a special focus on the various attempts of de-Stalinization and the rise of revisionist Marxism and other critical projects culminating in the carnivalesque but also extremely dramatic year of 1968. This volume is followed by Volume II: Negotiating Modernity in the 'Short Twentieth Century' and Beyond, Part II: 1968-2018.…
