Metsä, the Finnish word for forest, is a selection of photographs from a project wherein Berntsen has set out to do an artistic documentation of the taiga, the landscape connecting the northern parts of Russia, Norway, Finland and Sweden. A flat landscape containing mainly marshland and coniferous forests. The book presents 60 black and white photographs from Northern Finland and Sweden, executed between 2013 and 2015 with a 16 x 21 cm large format camera. The book also has an essay by Jan-Erik Lundström, translated to Finnish, Sami and Russian. Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. Text in English and Swedish. 269 pp. Light wear to the dust jacket. Irving Penn is one of our century's most influential and important photographers. The one hundred photographs in Irving Penn's donation to moderna Museet are a most representative selection of five decades of work. The choice of motifs ranges from the world of fashion to the world of the nomads of Morocco from urban elegance to discarded cigarette butts, from naked bodies to dressed up celebrities. Each subject, each human being appears to be detached, like a phenomenon; like a unique, timeless moment. Each image is like a separate thing, carried by its own lustre. In the catalogue text "voluptuousness and asceticism: Irving Penn's Photographic worlds" Jan-Erik Lundström writes: "Irving Penn's photographs are charged with an asceticism as exacting as it is lush and voluptuous. In his pictorial world, form is the royal road to knowledge and humanity's salvation from everyday existence. There is something autonomous, self sufficient, incontestable and, in a good sense, high handed about every photograph in this wide-ranging corpus. It lives its own life: formal precision and dignity join and guide the viewer. Penn's gaze never wanders. A Penn photograph etches itself permanently in one's consciousness: It demands-from itself and from the viewer-absolute presence. A stoical passion before the objects, bodies, faces both disarms and challenges those who encounter his pictures.".…
