She reappeared when the expressman brought Bob's trunk to the house. "Mrs. West doesn't allow trunks to be brought into the house," she said. "You will have to put it in the— in the—" She was having trouble with the word—"cellar." "Wait'll you see the cellar," the expressman said as he and Bob carried the trunk toward the house. "You wouldn't believe in a ritzy place like this they'd keep a cellar lookin' like that." Finally Bob met Mrs. West, and he didn't think it was going to manage living in that house for a whole summer. But Betty Clay, the second-floor paying tenant, faintly cheered him. They were to share a bathroom, Mrs. West had told him. In time they were to share more than that, including a secret. Howard Roman has written a full-bodied and fascinating novel with suspense—lots of suspense. The horror behind the novel is enhanced by the reality of the people and the scenes that hide it, and the quality of the writing, which is high.
