Añadir al carritoArgyle Books first printing (per publisher's statement upon copyright page). 160 pages. Hardcover: H 21.25cm x L 14.25cm. Dust jacket rubbed lightly rubbed; a few scuffs, nicks, and some creasing at edges; front flap is not price-clipped. Black cloth spine slightly scuffed at heel; spine's gilt lettering remains bright; blue boards. Interior pages are bright and clean. Binding retains some crispness. Evidently this Argyle Books version is the book's second edition overall as ROUGH TRADE was originally issued as a pulp fiction paperback under the title THE GAY DETECTIVE in 1961 by Fresno, California publisher Saber Books. Author Louis Randall is best remembered for his classic 1965 campy culinary reference THE GAY COOKBOOK for which he utilized the altered pseudonym of Chef Lou Rand Hogan.…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. First Thus. An in-your-face culinary excursion "designed to take care of the needs of the androgynous" defined here as "limp-wristed," billing itself as "the complete compendium of campy cuisine and menus for men.or what have you." With tongue-in-cheek humor, it strove to appeal to "straights & other types of squares" as well as "queens [looking for] faggots' fare." In 280 pages with "campy cartoon" illustrations throughout by David Costain. Orig. published by Sherbourne in 1965, this is the FIRST EDITION, First Printing from Bell/Crown (First, thus), NOT a modern reprint! With red cloth-covered boards lettered in black script to spine, this hardcover octavo is in Fine condition: just a tad less bright than Brand New! Completely clean, pages creamy white & unmarked, binding strong & straight, hinges secure, corners crisp. The unclipped DJ is Near Fine, with very mild rubbing to extremities; nicely protected in new clear mylar cover Free (removed for photos). Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. True first edition, first printing. Oversized illustrated hardcover without dust jacket as issued. Internally a fine clean tight unmarked copy, some toning to covers, spotting to outer page edges and a small nick to the spine. Written by Louis Randall under the Hogan pseudonym. While underground and covert publications were available to the gay community, this title is widely acknowledged to be amongst the first to openly market to and normalize the life of gay folks with wit and humor. This large format edition published by Shelbourne Press in Los Angeles is the true first edition and is quite rare. A smaller format version with orange boards and printed dust jacket was issued later by Bell of New York. Rare in this first edition.…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Presumed first edition (no direct statement provided). viii, 280 pages. Hardcover: H 26cm x L 18.5cm. No dust jacket present (may not have been published with one). White boards with color illustrations; light soiling to boards and spine; small circular gold $5.95 price sticker (presumably supplied by Sherbourne Press which, if correct, precludes a publisher dj) affixed at front board's center right. Toning to front and rear free endpapers; interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding retains some crispness. An attractive near fine copy. THE GAY COOKBOOK was among the earliest American books to overtly acknowledge homosexuality and present the gay home as one of humor, warmth, and normalcy in direct conflict to the prevalent attitudes of the era. Utilizing the pseudonym of Chef Lou Rand Hogan, author Louis Randall promoted ethnically diverse recipes no doubt influenced by his verified employment in the cruise ship industry starting in the 1930s until World War II and his unverified experiences as a chef at luxury restaurants and hotels in Los Angeles and San Francisco from the 1940s to 1960s. Cornell University historian Stephen Vider cites this Sherbourne Press imprint as the book's first edition, a circumstance of the company specifically seeking publications for niche markets likely in combination with the author's geographic proximity. A second edition was issued in late 1965 in a smaller hardcover format by New York's much more mainstream Bell Publishing Company, an imprint of Crown Publishers. Sherbourne advertised the book in the New York Times and Publisher's Weekly but their distribution favored the west coast and not the east and their print run was undoubtedly smaller than the Bell edition which benefited from Crown's national reach. Description copyright David Hallinan, Bookseller. …

Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. In the sensous sixties, Chef Hogan wrote his Wild and Wacky book. A reprint of the original edition, when the author was decades ahead of his time. The Gay Cookbook is filled with the jokes and innuendo of the time. Even on the frontispiece, in the book's first pages, a line reads "All rights reserved, Mary." An essential part of mid-century campy dialogue, was the use of female nicknames among gay men: Hogan addresses the reader by many, including Myrtle, Mabel, and Mame. The recipes are lengthy and chatty. But while written humorously, the recipes often are complex and cosmopolitan. While his repertoire includes French and American classics, it also features Mexican, Southeast Asian, and Hawaiian recipes. For a guacamole recipe, Hogan gives the basics as avocado, tomatoes, fresh lime, and salt. Those wanting to mix it up can add onion and spices, he writes, but he forbids more variation. "This is an 'original' Mexican recipe," he writes, "before it's been crapped up by some Hollywood or Brooklyn chef."Hogan also explains how to prepare an elaborate rijsttafel buffet, a many-coursed Indonesian banquet with roots in Dutch colonialism. A chili recipe spans several pages and requires hours of cooking. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…
