Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book discusses the Settled Land Act of 1882 and its impact on one of the most contentious issues of the time, the ownership of land and the laws that govern its acquisition and inheritance. The author traces the history and context of land tenure in England showing its continuing significance as a social and political question in the latter half of the 19th century. The author explains that the Settled Land Act, authored by Lord Cairns, was intended to address then current objections to the existing land laws. These objections included the perceived injustices caused by the practice of primogeniture, the system of entail, the complex process of land conveyance, and the way in which land was tied up in settlements. The book provides a detailed analysis of the main provisions of the Act and explores the various ways in which the Act sought to address the concerns of its critics. The book argues that the Settled Land Act was a significant piece of legislation that sought to balance the concerns of those who wished to preserve the traditional system of land ownership with those who argued for a more equitable and flexible system. The author concludes by suggesting that the Act was successful in achieving its objectives and that it remains an important part of the English legal system today, over 140 years after it was passed.
