When the German edition was almost out of print, Springer-Verlag decided to bring out a new edition, this time in English. For this English version the text has been thoroughly revised, enlarged, and sup plemented by over 100 new figures. The book deals with the current state of international knowl edge on strata and ground movement over mine workings, with its damaging effects on mine shafts and the land surface, and with measures for regulating mining damage in law and reducing it in practice. Discussion begins with the mine excavation underground - the cause - and ends with the damage to surface structure- the effect. Methods of roof control, including the subject of rock bursts, are not discussed, since that is a field concerned more with the safety of underground workings than with minimizing damage at the surface. Of the 500 literature references in the German edi tion, only the more important for an international readership have been retained, but no value judgement on the many pUblica tions not mentioned should be read into this. The book is principally intended as a working aid for the mine surveyor, the mining engineer, the architect, and the civil engineer. For the student and the post-graduate researcher, it of fers a summary and guide to this whole field of knowledge.…

In dieser Zeit hat der bergschaden kundliche Wissensstand durch in- und auslandische Forschungsarbeiten bedeutend zugenommen, sind Datenverarbeitungsanlagen und Analogrech ner in Anwendung gekommen und hat ein internationaler Erfahrungsaus tausch auf Kongressen eingesetzt. Nachdem die stUrmische Entwicklungs phase einer gewissen Konsolidierung gewichen ist, hielt ich es zeit lich fUr angebracht, die Bergschadenkunde yom heutigen Erkenntnisstand aus neu darzustellen und die in vielen Einzelaufsatzen verstreuten Forschungsergebnisse in einem Buche zu vereinigen. GroBer Wert wurde deshalb bei der Abfassung des Buches auf eine aktuelle und moglichst kurze, doch verstandliche Darstellung gelegt, damit der Leser in der Lage ist, die hier und spater gebotenen Informationen in ein geschlos senes System der Bergschadenkunde einzuordnen, und er nicht 'den Fa den verliert'. Dazu dienen atich die zahlreichen, Uberwiegend neuen Zeichnungen und Lehrstofftafeln. 1m Vergleich zur alten 'Bergschadenkunde' von Niemczyk ist das Wis sensgebiet unter Fortlassung der meBtechnischen und gebirgsmechani schen Kapitel neu gegliedert worden, und zwar beginnend beim Abbau - der Ursache - und endend bei den beschadigten Bauwerken Uber Tage - den Folgen. Bei den Formeln wurden die zukUnftigen internationalen Einheiten S1 und die D1N-Empfehlungen 21 900, Bl. 100, berUcksich tigt; die GegenUberstellung der alten und neuen Zeichen in der Ta fel 9 und in der FuBnote auf Seite 10 soll den Ubergang erleichtern.…
