Buch. Condición: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Scattering theory provides a framework for understanding the scattering of waves and particles. This book presents a simple physical picture of diffractive nuclear scattering in terms of semi-classical trajectories, illustrated throughout with examples an…d case studies. Trajectories in a complex impact parameter plane are discussed, and it stresses the importance of the analytical properties of the phase shift function in this complex impact plane in the asymptotic limit. Several new rainbow phenomena are also discussed and illustrated. Written by Nobel Prize winner Roy J. Glauber, and Per Osland, an expert in the field of particle physics, the book illustrates the transition from quantum to classical scattering, and provides a valuable resource for researchers using scattering theory in nuclear, particle, atomic, and molecular physics. This title is also available as open access on Cambridge Core.

Soft cover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, journal issue in original printed wrappers, of Glauber's Nobel Prize winning work giving the theoretical explanation of coherent emission of radiation, the basis of the action of the maser and laser. Glauber was awarded one half of the 2005 Nobel Prize in physics "for… his contribution to the quantum theory of optical coherence." "[Glauber's] theory uses the formalism of quantum electrodynamics to describe the absorption of a photon in a detector. By correlating several such detectors, [Glauber showed how] one may obtain higher order correlations, which [then] display clearly the characteristic features of quantum radiation" (Nobel Prize Website). Glauber explained the fundamental characteristics of different types of light, such as laser light and light from light bulbs. His theories are widely used in the field of quantum optics. Large 8vo, pp. 2135-2622 (small crease to lower corner of last few leaves, not affecting Galuber's paper). Original printed wrappers (slight dicolouration to upper wrapper).

22.5 cm. [315]-414 pp. Printed wrappers. WITH 3 sheets of yellow-lined paper, containing notes in manuscript by Abraham Pais. Very good. Abstract: After a general discussion of the simple problem of elastic scattering by a static potential where some of the familiar methods of treating the problem and certain very useful theorem…s regarding the scattering amplitudes are reviewed, the high-energy approximation is developed and applied to problems of gradually increasing complexity. Finally, the collisions involving many-body systems are discussed. See also: Vincenzo Barone, Enrico Predazzi, High-Energy Particle Diffraction. / Roy Jay Glauber is an American theoretical physicist, born in 1925 in New York City. He was a member of the 1941 graduating class of the Bronx High School of Science, and matriculated at Harvard University. After his sophomore year he was recruited to work on the Manhattan Project, where (at the age of 18) he was one of the youngest scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory. After two years involved in calculating critical mass for the atom bomb, he returned to Harvard completing his bachelor's in 1946 and PhD in 1949. Currently, he is the Mallinckrodt Professor of Physics at Harvard University and Adjunct Professor of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona. Glauber was jointly awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his contribution to the quantum theory of optical coherence". In this work, published in 1963, he created a model for photodetection and explained the fundamental characteristics of different types of light, such as laser light and light from light bulbs. His theories are widely used in the field of quantum optics. He currently serves on the National Advisory Board of the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, the research arms of Council for a Livable World. Glauber has also received many honors for his research, including the Albert A. Michelson Medal from the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia (1985), the Max Born Award from the Optical Society of America (1985), the Dannie Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics from the American Physical Society (1996), and the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physics. Professor Glauber was awarded the 'Medalla de Oro del CSIC' ('CSIC's Gold Medal') in a ceremony held in Madrid, Spain. He was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society as well (ForMemRS) in 1997.

[++] Glauber was awarded half of the 2005 Nobel Prize in physics "for his contribution to the quantum theory of optical coherence." "[Glauber's] theory uses the formalism of quantum electrodynamics to describe the absorption of a photon in a detector. By correlating several such detectors, [it was shown how] one may obtain higher order correlations, which would display clearly the characteristic features of quantum radiation."--Nobel Prize Foundation website. This paper has been cited 5000+ times. [++] "In 1963, U.S. theoretical physicist Roy J. Glauber published his historic paper, "The Quantum Theory of Optical Coherence," which explained the fundamental characteristics of different types of lightfrom lasers to light bulbs. Glauber's theory of photodetection is highly influential in quantum optics and led to his sharing the 2005 Nobel Prize in physics "for his contributions to the quantum theory of optical coherence."--Hagler Institute, Texas A&M website. [++] "The concept of coherence which has conventionally been used in optics is found to be inadequate to the needs of recently opened areas of experiment. To provide a fuller discussion of coherence, a succession of correlation functions for the complex field strengths is defined. The nth order function expresses the correlation of values of the fields at 2n different points of space and time. Certain values of these functions are measurable by means of n-fold delayed coincidence detection of photons. A fully coherent field is defined as one whose correlation functions satisfy an infinite succession of stated conditions. Various orders of incomplete coherence are distinguished, according to the number of coherence conditions actually satisfied. It is noted that the fields historically described as coherent in optics have only first-order coherence. On the other hand, the existence, in principle, of fields coherent to all orders is shown both in quantum theory and classical theory. The methods used in these discussions apply to fields of arbitrary time dependence. It is shown, as a result, that coherence does not require monochromaticity. Coherent fields can be generated with arbitrary spectra."--Abstract.

1st Edition. BOUND FULL VOLUME FIRST EDITION OF GLAUBER'S NOBLE PRIZE WINNING QUANTUM THEORY OF OPTICAL COHERENCE, the quantum mechanical basis of different types of light. Glauber's announcement of his theory was published in a letter to Physical Review Letters the same year. Offered here is the longer explanation of the theory…. "[Glauber's] theory uses the formalism of quantum electrodynamics to describe the absorption of a photon in a detector. By correlating several such detectors, [Glauber showed how] one may obtain higher order correlations, which [then] display clearly the characteristic features of quantum radiation" (Nobel Prize Website). Glauber's work formed the basis for the development of Quantum Optics when it was written and still does to this day. Glauber was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work in optical coherence in 2005. Glauber's seminal theory, at first controversial but now widely used in the field of quantum optics, differentiates between laser (coherent) light and normal (blackbody) light. Arguing that photon correlation experiments must be based on a consistent application of quantum electrodynamics, Glauber showed how the quantum theory has to be formulated in order to describe the detection process. "This also served to bring out the distinction between the behaviour of thermal light sources and presently common coherent sources such as lasers and quantum amplifiers. CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: American Institute of Physics. 4to (10.25 x 8 inches; 256 x 200mm). Entire volume, continuously paginated pp. 1639-2622. Glauber paper: pp.2529-2538. Ex-libris with minimal markings (pictorial plate on paste down and no spine markings whatsoever). Illustration: In-text figures throughout. Exterior: Bound in gold buckram with a gilt-lettered spine. Tight, solid. Near fine. Interior: Bright and very clean throughout. Near fine condition.
